My life as Mick Mounter : Performing genders with the Chicago Kings (Illinois) by Michelle Campbell( Book )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This study is an autoethnographic account of the Chicago Kings drag king and gender performance group. This study describes how the Chicago Kings created innovative, ensemble-driven as well as solo, queer gender performance art in Chicago as a membership based troupe from March of 2001 through June of 2005. The ways in which the Chicago Kings played an important role in Chicago's queer culture by creating space for dyke, lesbian, bisexual, gay, femme and transgendered communities in the white gay male dominated queer center, Boystown, is analyzed. The study investigates how the Chicago Kings were able to garner lesbian economic capital to secure a regular weekend night at a gay club in the heart of Boystown and argues for the emergence of a lesbian driven sub-culture within Chicago's queer community. The various genders, personas and sexualities of the Chicago Kings are examined as well as the Kings' cultivation of a distinctively lesbian camp aesthetic. This study interrogates the performance of race by the Chicago Kings and the larger gender performance community, critiquing the easy appropriation of work by artists of color in the gender performance community and exploring the difficulties faced by Kings of color in the queer performance culture. In sum, the Chicago Kings gender performance troupe is investigated at the multiple levels of the genderqueer individual, the queer community and its place within queer history
