Classics in total synthesis : targets, strategies, methods by K. C Nicolaou( Book )

15 editions published between 2003 and 2011 in English and Spanish and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Retaining his excellent, proven approach, world-famous chemist and passionate teacher K.C. Nicolaou and his student Jason S. Chen compile here the important strategies and tools employed to construct complex molecules. Through 42 syntheses of 2.5 challenging natural products they explain the key steps of the synthetic pathway, highlighting the major developments for easier understanding, and contrasting these to other synthetic methods. Similar to its predecessors and completing a trilogy, this textbook analyzes the syntheses in a didactic manner, with several chapters including mini-reviews of key methodologies, and an emphasis on the history, mechanism, scope, and generality of the reactions. In contrast to the first two volumes, this new one features full-color frontispieces
Development of quality assurance methods for epoxy graphite prepreg by J. S Chen( Book )

5 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of this program was to develop quality assurance methods for graphite epoxy/prepregs. Liquid chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography were investigated. These methods were applied to a second prepreg system. The program also sought to correlate the resin matrix formulation with mechanical properties. Dynamic mechanical analysis and fracture toughness methods were investigated. Liquid chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography were all successfully developed as quality assurance methods for graphite epoxy prepregs. The liquid chromatography method was the most sensitive to changes in resin formulation. All three methods were successfully applied to a second prepreg system. No correlation could be established between mechanical properties and the resin formulation variations defined within this contract
A New Stabilized Nodal Integration Approach( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A new stabilized nodal integration scheme is proposed and implemented. In this work, focus is on the natural neighbor meshless interpolation schemes. The approach is a modification of the stabilized conforming nodal integration (SCNI) scheme and is shown to perform well in several benchmark problems

A probabilistic theory of model-based diagnosis by J. S Chen( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis presents a probabilistic theory for model-based diagnosis. An objective measure is used to rank hypotheses, viz., posterior probabilities, instead of subjective parsimony. Fault hypotheses are generated in decreasing probability order. The theory provides an estimate of the expected diagnosis cost of an action. The result of the minimal cost action is used to adjust hypothesis probabilities and to select further actions. The major contributions of this thesis are the incorporation of probabilistic reasoning into model-based diagnosis and the integration of repair as part of diagnosis. The integration of diagnosis and repair makes it possible to effectively troubleshoot failures in complex systems."
Hydrothermal reactions and techniques : the proceedings of the Seventh International Symposium on Hydrothermal Reactions, Changchun, China, 14-18 December 2003 by Changchun, China) International Symposium on Hydrothermal Reactions ( 2003( )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hydrothermal techniques have been widely used in the synthesis of advanced materials, the treatment of wastes, and the preparation and extraction of special chemicals. They have also been studied for the mimicking of geothermal processes. Nowadays, hydrothermal techniques and sciences play a very important role both in industry and in academia. This book includes contributions from chemists and chemical engineering scientists worldwide who are active in the field of hydrothermal reactions and techniques. The topics covered range from fundamentals of hydrothermal reactions, modeling of hydrothermal processes, new techniques for hydrothermal treatment, and new materials from hydrothermal systems to supercritical fluid reaction systems
Confidence intervals for parametric functions in nonlinear regression by J. S Chen( )

2 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We consider confidence intervals for a function g of the parameters in a nonlinear regression model. It is known that the standard linearization method confidence intervals can be quite poor. The likelihood method which is considerably more complexi and expensive is the standard alternative to the linearization method. We consider these and three additional methods, a new method, a modified likelihod method and the score method. We are interested in both statistical and computational issues, primarily the robustness of coverage probability to departure from linearity and the expense and reliability of computing algorithms. In Chapter 2, the five methods are presented. All of the methods are invariant under reparametrization. Conditions that make the likelihood method exact are identified. Also theoretical comparisons of methods are discussed. In Chapter 3, algorithms for finding the likelihood method confidence bounds are discussed. They are the direct computation of confidence bounds, the profile plot, and alternative Newton-Raphson method. The use of the profile
Further targets, strategies, methods by K. C Nicolaou( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Classics in total synthesis by K. C Nicolaou( Book )

in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a must for every synthetic organic chemist. With didactic skill and clarity, K. C. Nicolaou and E. J. Sorensen present the most remarkable and ingenious total syntheses from the laboratories of some of the world's greatest synthetic organic chemists. To make the strategies more understandable and accessible, especially to the novice, each total synthesis is first analyzed retrosynthetically. The authors then carefully describe each step and comment on alternative methods and potential pitfalls. When appropriate, key chemical reactions are discussed in the wider context of the chemical literature, giving the reader a lesson in both total synthesis and synthetic methods. Diverse structural types of natural products and important organic transformations including pericyclic, ionic, radical, and photochemical reactions are covered. Catalysis, asymmetric synthesis, organometallic chemistry, and cyclization reactions are especially highlighted. Mechanism, reactivity, selectivity, and stereochemistry are presented clearly and discussed analytically. Numerous references to useful reviews and the original literature will make this book the first point of entry into the vast field of synthetic organic chemistry. Special emphasis is placed on the skillful use of graphics and schemes. Retrosynthetic analyses, reaction sequences and crucial synthetic steps are presented in boxed, blue background sections within the text. For easy reference, key intermediates are also shown in the margins. Graduate students, teachers, and researchers alike will find this book to be a gold mine of useful information. Every synthetic chemist will have a copy on his or her desk

The Ohio State University NCTR Data Base File Structure( Book )

2 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

An advanced radar backscatter measurement is being developed so that Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) techniques can be developed by a data base user community. The NCTR data base contains files in a standardized format. The format allows for a named file to contain header information in plain English text (ASCII) followed by a variable amount of amplitude (dB) and phase (degrees) data. Any file may contain raw measured data, calibrated data, or filtered/edited calibrated data. The format uses a fixed word length (16 bit) packed in 512-word blocks. The result is flexible, yet efficient, storage of data
