Ill fares the land by Tony Judt( Book )

2 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in German and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In "Ill Fares The Land," Tony Judt, one of our leading historians and thinkers, reveals how we have arrived at our present dangerously confused moment and offers the language we need to address our common needs, rejecting the nihilistic individualism of the far right and the debunked socialism of the past. To find a way forward, Judt argues that we must look to our not so distant past and to social democracy in action: to re-enshrining fairness over mere efficiency

The memory chalet by Tony Judt( Book )

6 editions published between 2012 and 2017 in German and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A series of short essays that had a breathtaking reception when they appeared, a few at a time, in the New York Review of Books. The pieces were remarkable both for their content and their method of composition: isolated at night in the prison of his paralysis, Judt would sort through his memories, arranging them, to better remember them, in the "rooms" of a Swiss chalet he recalled from an idyllic childhood visit, before dictating them in the morning to be published. The essays are at times political but always personal, calling up memories of food, youth, sex, education, train travel, and other subjects with a clarity and intensity born of both his historian's skills of observation and judgment and the heightened awareness of time's passage imposed by his undeniable mortality. Collected now in The Memory Chalet, these reflections make up a memoir that evokes, with clear-eyed passion, the life of the mind, as well as the body. --Tom Nissley

Orient express by John Dos Passos( Book )

3 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in German and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The illustrated longitude by Dava Sobel( Book )

4 editions published between 2002 and 2007 in German and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This fully illustrated edition of the international best-seller Longitude recounts in words and images the epic quest to solve the greatest scientific problem of the eighteenth and three prior centuries: determining how a captain could pinpoint his ship's location at sea. All too often, voyages ended in disaster when crew and cargo were either lost at sea or destroyed upon the rocks of an unexpected landfall. Thousands of lives and the fortunes of nations hung on a resolution. Governments established prizes for anyone whose method or device proved successful. The scientific establishment, certain that a celestial answer would be found, invested untold effort in this pursuit. By contrast, John Harrison built the unimaginable: a clock that told perfect time at sea, known today as the chronometer. Harrison's trials and tribulations during his forty-year quest to win the prize are the culmination of this remarkable story.--From publisher description
Mit Platon in Palästina : vom Nutzen der Philosophie in einer zerrissenen Welt by Carlos Fraenkel( Book )

4 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in German and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Was halten palästinensische Studenten von Platon? (Quelle: www.buch.ch)
Frühstück mit Lucian Freud by Geordie Greig( Book )

3 editions published in 2014 in German and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

He'll pay for her to be his, pay her a lot. And now the narrator discovers that he is as much in love with her as she is with him, perhaps more, though it will take him a while to realize just how utterly lost he is
