In "Ill Fares The Land," Tony Judt, one of our leading historians and thinkers, reveals how we have arrived at our present dangerously confused moment and offers the language we need to address our common needs, rejecting the nihilistic individualism of the far right and the debunked socialism of the past. To find a way forward, Judt argues that we must look to our not so distant past and to social democracy in action: to re-enshrining fairness over mere efficiency

Orient express by John Dos Passos( Book )

3 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in German and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The illustrated longitude by Dava Sobel( Book )

4 editions published between 2002 and 2007 in German and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This fully illustrated edition of the international best-seller Longitude recounts in words and images the epic quest to solve the greatest scientific problem of the eighteenth and three prior centuries: determining how a captain could pinpoint his ship's location at sea. All too often, voyages ended in disaster when crew and cargo were either lost at sea or destroyed upon the rocks of an unexpected landfall. Thousands of lives and the fortunes of nations hung on a resolution. Governments established prizes for anyone whose method or device proved successful. The scientific establishment, certain that a celestial answer would be found, invested untold effort in this pursuit. By contrast, John Harrison built the unimaginable: a clock that told perfect time at sea, known today as the chronometer. Harrison's trials and tribulations during his forty-year quest to win the prize are the culmination of this remarkable story.--From publisher description
Frühstück mit Lucian Freud by Geordie Greig( Book )

3 editions published in 2014 in German and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

New York in the 1950s. A man on a barstool is telling a story about a woman he met in a bar, early married and soon divorced, her child farmed out to her parents, good-looking, if a little past her prime. They'd gone out, they'd grown close, but as far as he was concerned it didn't add up to much. He was a busy man. Then one day, out dancing, she runs into a rich awkward lovelorn businessman. He'll pay for her to be his, pay her a lot. And now the narrator discovers that he is as much in love with her as she is with him, perhaps more, though it will take him a while to realize just how utterly lost he is
Memoirs of Montparnasse by John Glassco( Book )

3 editions published in 2010 in German and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First published in 1970, and now a Canadian classic, Memoirs of Montparnasse by John Glassco portrays expatriate life in Paris, which began for him in 1928 when he arrived there from Montreal at the age of nineteen. Glassco revelled in his youth, his carefree existence, his powers of observation, above all in Paris, and his book is a celebration of these things. In the course of his lively narrative describing the often wayward activities of his circle, we meet George Moore, Robert McAlmon, Man Ray, Kay Boyle, Peggy Guggenheim, Ernest Hemingway, Morley Callaghan, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, Frank Harris, and many hedonists and eccentrics who are less well known. Each of them makes an indelible impression on the reader through Glassco's literary skill.--Cover
