The problem of evading a constant speed proportional navigation pursuer is considered. Both the evader and the pursuer are assumed to have limited lateral acceleration capabilities. A time lag is included in the pursuer's guidance system. The problem of evasion is formulated as an optimal control problem with the performance criterion being the range at the point of closest approach. The type of evasive maneuver is shown to be dependent upon the initial relative positions of the target and pursuer. Typical trajectories for the target and evader are illustrated. (Author)

The horizontal plane is chosen so that the effects of gravity may be neglected. Constraints on the turning rate and time delays in both the pursuer's and target's guidance system are included. The sensitivity of the miss distance to variations in the parameters associated with pursurer and evader are presented. (Author)

Recent interest in air to air combat has led to investigations of several interesting problems in control theory and differential games. Among these problems is the determination of optimal evasive tactics for a high performance aircraft attacked by an air-air missile using proportional navigation. The goal is to determine the maneuvers for which the aircraft can cause the greatest miss. Preliminary results in this study will be described. (Author)
