Correspondence, agent/owner accounts, crew papers, custom house records, insurance policies, bills of lading and exchange, bills and receipts, memoranda, and other materials, of Thomas Knowles & Co., whaling agents and merchants in New Bedford (established 1844 by Thomas Knowles (1803-1877), his brother, John Pepper Knowles (1805-1896), and Joseph M. Knowles (1819-1876)), concerning 90 voyages of 17 whaling vessels including ship/barks Falcon, Minerva, 2nd, and, Tamerlane, and bark Wave. Includes piece-work sewing accounts, bills and receipts, and insurance policy relating to a mercantile firm operated in New Bedford (1832-1845) by Thomas and John Pepper Knowles; and personal papers and other materials of family members including Thomas, John Pepper, Joseph M., and John Pepper Knowles, 2nd (1830-1891). Contains administrative records of New Bedford Tanning Company (later renamed New Bedford Tannery) reflecting the duties of Thomas Knowles's son, Thomas Henry Knowles (1837-1909) as treasurer of the firm; and account book of another son, Charles Sumner Knowles (1850-1911), regarding his business as manufacturer of sealing wax at New Bedford (1892-1897)
