15 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th IFIP/IEEE International Conference on the Management of Multimedia Networks and Services, MMNS 2001, held in Chicago, IL, USA, in October/November 2001. The 23 revised full papers and six short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 106 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on the management of multimedia streaming, resource management in wireless multimedia, QoS management on the Internet, fault management on the Internet, agents for multimedia management, and multimedia service management
An adaptive virtual path allocation policy for broadband networks by Ariel Orda( Book )

5 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "We propose a new policy for virtual path bandwidth allocation in broadband networks. Based on a threshold scheme, our policy handles the inherent trade-off between bandwidth utilization and processing costs. In each virtual path controller the thresholds are chosen so as to keep bandwidth utilization high, while obtaining a low rate of processing requests. Two novel ideas are used in our threshold scheme: adaptivity, which results in a better prediction of future bandwidth requirements; and hyteresis, which prevents excessive processing of requests due to oscillations around thresholds. We tested the performance of our new bandwidth control scheme, and compared it with previously suggested schemes. The performance measures were the expected amount of unused bandwith, the average signaling load and the blocking probability. Performance has been evaluated through numerical computations as well as by simulations. Our analysis is based on a time segmentation technique which allows us to reduce a Markov chain with NM states into M Markov chains with N states and a one-dimensional chain with M states. Our results show that our policy significantly improves upon previously suggested approaches."
A platform for real-time visualization and interactive simulation of large multimedia networks by M. C Chan( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "We present a platform for developing and evaluating control systems for emerging multimedia networks. The platform allows us to closely approximate the functional and dynamic behavior of network control systems. By providing support for real-time visualization and interactive emulation, it can be used to study multimedia networks in various scenarios, such as different load patterns, network sizes and management operations. The current implementation runs on a KSR-1 and an SP2 parallel processor, which are connected to a graphics workstation via ATM links."
A markup system for shared HTML documents by Giovanni Pacifici( Book )

3 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "Advances in the World Wide Web technology made an immense amount of multimedia information available to the desktop. As a natural consequence of this easy access to a global information infrastructure, several Web co-browsing systems have been recently introduced [1,5,9]. In such systems, several participants join a conference during which they navigate the Internet exploring its resources together. In this paper, we present a shared markup system that is designed specifically to support Web co-browsing. Based on the Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) [3], the markup system is interoperable across different platforms and Web browsers. It allows for online annotation, of shared HTML documents, directly inside the browser's windows. The annotations created by the markup system are realized using HTML components that are composed dynamically. The mechanisms used for controlling the browsers' environments and synchronizing the views of the participants to a consistent view are also described."
Prototyping network architectures on a supercomputer by M. C Chan( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "Architectures for emerging multimedia networks need to be exercised and revised, before they can be implemented on a large network. We have built a platform that supports the evaluation of network architectures. The platform allows us to closely approximate the functional and dynamic behavior of network control systems. By providing support for real-time visualization and interactive emulation, it can be used to study multimedia networks in various scenarios, such as different load patterns, network sizes and management operations. The current implementation runs on a KSR-1 and an SP2 parallel processor, which are connected to a graphics workstation via ATM links. We use the platform in several projects, one of which aims at developing an architecture for managing multimedia network services."
MultiMedia Digital Community: a Web-enabled multimedia collaboration system by Thomas J. Watson IBM Research Center( Book )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "The convergence of telecommunications and computers is expected to bring a real revolution in the communications world and hence in the way that people interact and communicate with each other. With the development of the world-wide web technology to browse and navigate through the Internet, new easy-to-use tools are being developed to simplify and enhance the on-line interaction of people. In this paper we will describe the multimedia digital community (MMDC) project and prototype, which is a web-enhanced teleconferencing solution. The MMDC solution is an open system, that is developed on the client-server model, and allows non-homogenous clients to use the Internet to establish and participate in audio and/or data conferences using a variety of audio and computer systems."

An architecture for the integration of Internet and telecommunication services by Constant Gbaguidi( Book )

1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: "In this paper, we propose an architecture for hybrid services, i.e., services that span many network technologies, especially the PSTN and the Internet. These services will play an important role in the future, because they leverage on the existing infrastructures, rather than requiring brand-new and sophisticated mechanisms to be deployed. We explore a few issues related to hybrid services and propose a platform, as well as a set of components, to facilitate their creation and deployment. The existing infrastructure is only required to generate specific events when requests for hybrid services are detected. We present the design of a service layer, based on Java, that handles the treatment of these special requests. Our service layer is provided with a set of generic components realized as Java Beans. Hence, we can provide hybrid services without changing the existing infrastructure. We illustrate this strength of our architecture by discussing the call forwarding service."
