Chronicles the events and people, successes and failures, of Wagner's life. Draws on primary sources from the Wagner family archives to show a man of great personal charm--and of overbearing egoism, selfishness and cruelty. His support for the revolutions of 1848 forced him into exile, but he easily won the fervent support of kings and emperors

Anton Bruckner's nine symphonies are a great achievement of the Romantic era, distinguished by their individuality and their intimation of a deeply spiritual nature. Widely mislabeled as a composer of 'Wagnerian' symphonies, Bruckner in fact developed a musical style completely distinct from Wagner's, even though he worshipped the older composer and admired his music passionately. He is often paired with Mahler, whom he influenced; both composers wrote symphonies of extravagant length, which really began to find a worldwide audience in the 1950s with the availability of long-playing records. On the personal level, Bruckner's life was in some ways a study in unhappiness. But the center of Bruckner's personality was surely his deep religious faith, reflected in his music and its range of emotions from terror to ecstasy. First published in 1975, Derek Watson's biography of Bruckner has been thoroughly revised and the discussion of the music significantly expanded in this new edition
Liszt by Derek Watson( Book )

3 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Liszt's career at the centre of the Romantic Movement encompassed the legendary virtuoso tours, the composition and transcriptions which revolutionized the possibilities of the instrument, his important period as conducter in Weimer, his creation of new types of orchestral and choral music, his influence as a teacher, and his lifelong radical approach to harmony, tonality, and form. Derek Watson also examines Liszt's liberal religious philosophy, his artistic aesthetic, and his tireless efforts on behalf of fellow musicians, viewing him essentially as a cosmopolitan, pan-European figure, unique in the breadth of his travels and culture, who drew upon a richly diverse legacy of art, and who in turn left his mark on many different schools of composition. Areas of his music which have been hitherto ignored or forgotten are brought to light, and several myths and misunderstandings about the man and his art are exposed and exploded
