Antoni Gaudí by J Roe( )

13 editions published between 2006 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 1,748 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Spanish architect and designer, Antoni Gaud ̕(1852-1926) was an important and influential figure in the history of contemporary Spanish art. His use of color, application of a range of materials and the introduction of organic forms into his constructions were an innovation in the realm of architecture. In his journal, Gaud ̕freely expressed his own feelings on art, "the colors used in architecture have to be intense, logical and fertile." His completed works (the Casa Batll,̤ 1905-1907 and the Casa Mil,̉ 1905-1910) and his incomplete works (the restoration of the Poblet Monastery and the altarpiece of Alella in Barcelona) illustrate the importance of this philosophy. His furniture designs were conceived with the same philosophy, as shown, for example, in his office (1878) or the lamps in the Plaza Real in Barcelona. The Sagrada Familia (1882-1926) was a monumental project which eventually took over his life (it was still incomplete at the time of his death)

On Christian iconography : selections from the Art of Painting (1649) by Francisco Pacheco( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this translation, the writings on religious painting by the Spanish painter Francisco Pacheco are for the first time made available to an English-speaking readership. The Art of Painting by Francisco Pacheco is an invaluable literary and theoretical source for the study of Spanish 17th-century painting; one of the major contributions of this book is the nine chapters, translated here, devoted to the issue of decorum in religious painting and the subject of religious iconography. Among the many subjects addressed in this book are Pacheco's own paintings, providing a rare insight into his artistic thinking, the reception of his paintings by a range of religious and secular authorities, and scholarly discussion of the historical basis for the iconography of subjects such as the Trinity, the Immaculate Conception, the Crucifixion and numerous saints including Sts. Jerome, Francis of Assisi, and Ignatius of Loyola
