Litterfall in pinelands of Everglades National Park by Alan Herndon( )

1 edition published in 1985 in English and held by 236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Litterfall was measured at 23 pineland sites in Long Pine Key Pine Island, Everglades National Park, during 1979, 1980, and 1981. Pine needle litter, at 70 percent of total litterfall, was the most important component. Another 25 percent of the total litterfall was composed of pine sticks, bark, and cones. The remaining litter consisted of leaves from the understory hardwoods and fronds of the herbaceous fern, Pteridium aquilinum. A significant (15%) increase of pine needle litter was observed in 1981 relative to 1980. A great deal of site-to-site variation in all components of litterfall was also found. The spatial variation in pine needle litter could be explained in part by differences in pine density and size among sites. This spatial variability in litterfall implies a corresponding variability in the rate of fuel accumulation which, in turn, implies that different areas in Long Pine Key are able to burn with different frequencies
Mowry Canal (C-103)--water quality and discharge into Biscayne Bay, Florida, 1975-1981 by Daniel J Scheidt( )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Mowry Canal, located approximately 25 miles south of Miami, FL, is of special interest to Biscayne National Park, FL because its annual discharge is generally the greatest of the three major water management canals that discharge into southern Biscayne Bay. The canal's water quality was assessed and its freshwater discharge into the bay was quantified. Water quality data from county and federal networks were analyzed for the period 1974-1981. The relationship between rainfall in the canal basin and discharge from the canal to Biscayne Bay is also discussed
Status of exotic woody species in Big Cypress National Preserve by Lance Gunderson( )

2 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 231 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The National Park Service (NPS) was assigned administration of the Big Cypress National Preserve (BICY) in the 1974 congressional act which created the preserve (PL 93-440). In this act, the NPS was charged with assuring that the "natural and ecological integrity" of the BICY would be maintained in perpetuity. One of the management objectives set forth by the NPS in the 1980 Environmental Assessment (USDI, NPS 1980) was to "control exotic plant and animal species when necessary to prevent disruption of native floral and faunal communities." In light of this objective, up-to-date biological information is needed on the problem species; especially which species pose problems, what are the distributions of the problem species, and what are the prognoses for these distributions in the current framework of environmental conditions at BICY?
