Antoine è nato da una relazione prematrimoniale della madre, la quale, anche dopo sposata, non ha rinunciato ad allacciare relazioni irregolari. Il patrigno è un uomo debole, sciocco e presuntuoso, sempre pronto ad attaccare lite con la moglie e a rinfacciarle quanto ha fatto per lei e per Antoine, dando un nome ed una casa ad un figlio non suo. Il ragazzo, che si trova a disagio in famiglia ed è incompreso a scuola, comincia a marinare le lezioni e a vagabondare per Parigi in compagnia dell'amico Renè, spendendo senza risparmio i soldi che è riuscito a racimolare. Sorpreso a rubare una macchina da scrivere nell'ufficio del patrigno, Antoine viene messo in una casa di correzione: i genitori sono lieti di potersi liberare di lui e della responsabilità che loro spetta per il suo comportamento.
