Princes & paupers : the art of Jacques Callot by Dena Marie Woodall( Book )

10 editions published in 2013 in English and Spanish and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The full spectrum of society springs to life in the detailed etchings of Jacques Callot (1592-1635). This acclaimed French printmaker trained in Italy and later worked as a court artist for Cosimo II de' Medici in Florence. Callot revolutionized printmaking by developing the process of hard-ground etching, and he applied his technical skills to depicting the world around him. The extraordinary etchings featured in this book testify to Callot's mastery of sacred and profane imagery. The authors delve into Callot's techniques and subjects, ranging from humorous scenes inspired by commedia dell'arte to noble feasts, biblical events, and even the horrors of war. They also explore how the artist used characters from opposite ends of society to expose the complexities and injustices of his time. With his keen sense of observation, Callot held a mirror to European culture of the early 1600s, revealing both its tragic and humorous aspects"--

Géricault's Oath of Brutus after the death of Lucretia : a small sketch anticipating his monumental style by Dena Marie Woodall( )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A key element in French Neoclassicism developed by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) was his commentary on contemporary political life through classical narratives. Jean-Louis-André-Thédore Géricault (1791-1824), considered a Romantic, is typically discussed for his modern subjects like The Raft of the Medusa (1818). However, Géricault used both "classical" themes stemming from the Davidian tradition and "modern" subjects, influenced by the Napoleonic fervor for contemporary life, in his artistic education. Géricault's artistic career, leading up to his travel to Italy in 1816, is not well documented. I suggest that the dualistic utilization of "classical" and "modern" elements between the years 1810-1816 were both essential elements in the formation of his early style. A small esquisse, or oil sketch, in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, dated around 1815, aids in the discussion of Géricault's formative years. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of Géricault's The Oath of Brutus after the Death of Lucretia, a small oil sketch that has been overlooked in Géricault's literature. It attempts to link Géricault's portrayal of one of the most familiar stories of the classical world to similar traditional iconographical motifs in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century France. Charles Clément, Géricault's biographer, thought that the years between 1814-1816 were unproductive for the artist and this belief is still held in some scholarly commentary. However, I would argue that this was a pivotal moment in Géricault's career. The Oath of Brutus, along with a number of drawings which fit stylistically and thematically to this oil sketch, supports this argument. With his later works, especially the monumental Raft of the Medusa, it is well known that Géricault followed an extremely meticulous process. A thorough examination of The Oath of Brutus sheds new light on specifics of Géricault's method of working at this early stage in his career. Dating The Oath of Brutus after the Death of Lucretia to early 1815 makes for a clarification of his early years. Though classical in subject matter, The Oath of Brutus displays a Romantic sensibility through its stylistic drama. This esquisse is a compelling example of a transitional work in his artistic progression. The Oath of Brutus after the Death of Lucretia further demonstrates that this was a period of decision-making for Géricault leading toward the development of his grand, monumental style
