Secondo la leggenda, il giovane e taciturno Liam, vedendo su uno scoglio la Selkie che tramutava la sua pelle di foca in quella di una incantevole bruna, decise di sottrarre la pelle dell'animale per sottoporre la donna al suo volere. Anche il fratello di Fiona, Jamie, aveva i capelli corvini, ma la sua culla scomparve nel mare al largo dell'isola di Roan Inish tra lo sgomento dei familiari. Fu anche per quello che i nonni di Fiona decisero di andare via dall'isola. Ora però i due anziani rischiano di trovarsi senza casa, perchè il proprietario della loro abitazione intende sfrattarli. Fiona, che culla la speranza di ritrovare il fratello scomparso anni prima, insieme a suo cugino Eamon, decide di ristrutturare, senza comunicarlo ai nonni, la casa di Roan Inish. La bambina per ben due volte ha visto il piccolo Jamie, ma questi, chiamato dalla sorella, fugge precipitosamenmte in entrambe le occasioni. Inizialmente nessuno crede al ritrovamento di Jamie, poi, progressivamente, i nonni si piegano a quella che potrebbe essere una speranza effettiva di riavere il nipote e decidono di trasferirsi nuovamente sull'isola. E sull'isola Jamie viene visto realmente: il bambino cerca di fuggire, ma sono le stesse foche che lo obbligano - sbarrandogli la strada - a rimanere con la sua famiglia d'origine
