Shade for young children : guidelines for shade protection against ultraviolet radiation in early childhood environments( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"These guidelines show how sun-safe environments can be developed without sacrificing the benefits of outdoor play. The design of UVR-protective shade is primarily the design of places for playing, socialising, learning and eating which are attractive, climatically and safe from ultraviolet radiation. These guidelines also focus on the outdoor areas of places where young pre-school-aged children attend regular supervised care, such as centre-based day care, kindergartens and playgroups. But they may also be supplied to a domestic setting, including family day care, or to play spaces which are not related to buildings at all. The vision of the guidelines is to make shade an essential part of every early childhood setting rather than an afterthought."

Improving the implementation of environmental strategies in the design of buildings : towards a life-cycle based, front loaded, framework for building environmental assessment during design by Steve Watson( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An argument is developed for a new framework for design, to assist in overcoming barriers to the implementation of environmentally responsible solutions for building design. This research first identifies some problems to be overcome in order to improve the implementation of environmentally responsible design solutions. The search for solutions to these problems guides the direction of the research. Three streams of investigation are conducted: an investigation of design methods ; an investigation of the potential for ecological theory to inform design thinking and then, hence to inform the development of building environmental assessment tools ; a series of case studies conducted in which two interventions have been made into the design process
