Proprio nel momento in cui Francie scopre quest'ultima in un tentativo di suicidio comincia l'escalation di una sorta di mania di persecuzione sommata ad un forte complesso di inferiorità nei confronti dei Nugent, la famiglia benestante del paese, colpevole, tra l'altro, di chiamare "maiali" tutti quelli che vivono con mezzi inferiori. Francie, mentre la madre viene temporaneamente allontanata per cure psicologiche, vive un progressivo aumento della sua aggressività che lo porta a peggiorare i rapporti con il piccolo paese ed anche con l'amico Joe, in difficoltà nel seguirne la deriva quasi criminale. Il ritorno della madre ha un effetto positivo sul comportamento del protagonista, ma ben presto i nuovi litigi portano Francie ad intraprendere una prima fuga da casa. Al suo ritorno dopo qualche giorno, pacificato e felice per aver comprato un regalo alla madre, lo attende l'amara sorpresa del suicidio di lei. Da questo momento il climax crescente della sua violenza è inarrestabile: spedito dapprima in riformatorio per aver defecato nel salotto dei Nugent, dove comincia un ripiegamento in se stesso che lo porta a rifugiarsi nei colloqui con una visione perenne della Madonna, al ritorno, sempre più isolato e solo dopo la morte del padre, compie la sua terribile vendetta sgozzando la signora Nugent come un maiale e dando fuoco alla sua casa. Il finale ci mostra Francie ormai adulto sul punto di uscire dal manicomio criminale nel quale ha scontato i suoi peccati di gioventù
