Con Maguire sempre alle calcagna, Sullivan scopre che Connor Rooney, utilizzando i conti in banca di persone decedute, sta truffando il padre, ma John Rooney, contattato da Sullivan affinché conosca la situazione, sostiene di esserne già al corrente e rifiuta di consegnargli il figlio. A Sullivan non rimane altro da fare che uccidere Rooney, nonostante questi lo abbia allevato come un figlio. Allontanata dal gruppo perché considerata non a livello delle altre, Muriel sottrae tutti i soldi dal conto in banca dei genitori e raggiunge le ragazze ad Hibiscus Island, una località di villeggiatura. Nel villaggio turistico Muriel incontra Rhonda, una sua vecchia compagna di classe e lega immediatamente con la spigliata ragazza, al punto da decidere di trasferirsi a Sidney per abitare con lei. Intanto, però, a Rhonda viene riscontrato un tumore che la costringerà sulla sedia a rotelle Muriel, pur sconvolta, si reca in atelier sempre diversi per provare nuovi abiti da sposa raccontando di fantomatici matrimoni e raccogliendo le foto che le commesse le scattano. Rhonda scopre l'album che raccoglie le immagini e rimprovera Muriel per l'accaduto. Ma intanto alla grossolana ragazza capita un'occasione unica: quella di sposare David Van Arkle, aitante campione di nuoto sudafricano, che deve prendere in moglie un'australiana per acquisire la nazionalità e gareggiare sotto la bandiera dei 'canguri' alle Olimpiadi. Ô l'apparente rivincita di Muriel: le frivole amiche, data la celebrità dello sposo, la implorano per poter partecipare come damigelle, il padre (giunto al matrimonio con Deidre, sua amante storica), che l'ha sempre considerata una buona a nulla, deve parzialmente ricredersi. Ma il matrimonio è di pura convenienza visto che la ragazza e il bel marito dormono in camere separate. A Purpoise Spit, nel frattempo, dopo essere stata abbandonata definitivamente dal marito, muore la madre di Muriel. La ragazza corre al paese e rimane disgustata dall'atteggiamento del padre, il quale si preoccupa maggiormente della reazione dei giornalisti ad un telegramma di condoglianze del primo ministro e non intende accolarsi l'onere di una famiglia che considera mediocre. Muriel, però, ha capito che cosa deve fare della sua vita: abbandona il marito che non ama, riprende Rhonda - che dopo il matrimonio dell'amica era tornata al paese - e ritorna a Sidney per un'esistenza vera e non più sognata o millantata
