Der Film schildert die Freundschaft zwischen Alfredo, dem Kinovorführer und Toto, dem Kinofan. Als Toto seinen ersten Liebeskummer hat, schickt ihn Alfredo zum Studium nach Rom. Toto wird ein bekannter Filmregisseur. Erst der Tod Alfredos bringt ihn wieder in das sizilianische Städtchen zurück - gerade noch rechtzeitig, um einen letzten Blick auf das Cinema Paradiso zu werfen, bevor es wegen einem Parkplatz dem Erdboden gleichgemacht wird. Ein Film über die Geschichte und Entwicklung des Kinos der 40er und 50er Jahre, ein Ort des Lebens. Der Film läßt die Geschichte eines sizilianischen Kinos Revue passieren, das in der Sozialisationsgeschichte eines kleinen Jungen eine große Rolle spielt. Für Toto ist das Kino das zweite Zuhause, die Leinwand das Fenster zur Welt und der Vorführer Alfredo ein Ersatzvater. Weil die Menschen lieber Kinosessel als Kirchenbänke drücken, läßt der Dorfpfarrer alle anzüglichen Szenen entfernen. Die Beute: geraubte Küsse aus mehreren Jahrzehnten und unsittliche Berührungen der verbotenen Art. Doch an den Schnittstellen der Zensur fangen die Träume der Menschen erst richtig an.
