"In the wake of the stock market crash and the financial crisis leading up to the Great Depression, many steps were taken to enhance regulation of the financial sector. One such item was the Federal Reserve prohibition on banks paying interest on demand deposit accounts, commonly referred to as Regulation Q or Reg Q. In the years leading up to the crash, there was an increasing trend of financial institutions competing with each other by offering higher interest rates on demand deposit accounts. In 1933, Federal regulators responded by promulgating Reg Q, which prohibited the payment of interest on demand deposits"--Page 1
