Zusammen mit Bernd Eichinger wagte sich Uli Edel - beiden zeichneten schon für "Christiane F." verantwortlich - an die schwierige Verfilmung des Romans. Die lose verknüpften Episoden der Vorlage wurden unter der strengen Aufsicht Selbys zu einer Geschichte zusammengefügt. Brooklyn in den 50er Jahren: Der Gewerkschaftler Harry, die Hure Tralala, der Transvestit Georgette und der Arbeiter Big Joe leben im heruntergekommenen Viertel Red Hook. Gewalt in jeder Form gehört zum Alltag, der Wunsch nach einem würdevollen Leben mit ein bißchen Liebe bleibt für alle Beteiligten ein Traum. Die Szene in der Tralala zu Tode vergewaltigt wird, ist nur bezeichnend für die Verrohung, die Selby und Uli Edel gleichermaßen gelungen und verstörend beschreiben
