Book
)
2 editions published in 2017 in French and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The third opus of a cycle concerning the work of the Champagne poet Eustache Deschamps (1346-1405?), this book extends the field of studies to the European scale. Close to the courts of Charles V and Charles VI of Valois, Eustache Deschamps testifies to the aesthetic and ideological changes that take place there, artistically as well as politically, without very often excluding the other. Elsewhere, his comic zeal is exercised over the unusual habits and customs with which he had to write about on his journeys outside the borders of France alongside these royal figures, who frequently positioned him in places where he decided the fate of the kingdom. This geographical extension corresponds to the political actuality of the time, agitated by the Hundred Years War and by the Schism (because of the crusade projects), but also by the personal interest which the author carried in his ecumene. Fast in times of misfortune, the court of the first Valois was a notorious agent of the diffusion of the "international gothic" as it was of the internationalization of the war conflicts and raised the hope of a dynastic renewal. The work of Deschamps is a mirror in which these great questions are reflected by touch. It is, therefore, at the time of events, to the French influence on foreign courts or fictitious (such as that of Bohemia), or like that of Spain (on the frontier regions agitated by councils), but also his influence on literary, musical and paleographic creations in France or England that we have dedicated this book. It testifies to the importance of the "Prince of high eloquence," who knew how to grasp the major currents of the thought of his time
