The equal justice gap : the conditions impacting choice of public interest law in current law students by Paula E McBride( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Research indicates that the number of law graduates entering private practice has consistently increased since 1980 whereas the number of lawyers choosing public practice, such as government legal positions, the judiciary, legal aid, public defense, or non-profit public interest organizations, has either remained the same or decreased. The historical foundation of law was designed to produce professionals who would serve the public and contribute to the ideals of a democratic and fair society as law professionals. This aspect of social justice in understood as the protection of equal access to liberties, rights, and opportunities. The Legal Services Corporation has determined there is an equal justice gap in our country where 75% if lawyers are practicing in the private sector compared to only 12% in a public service position. Research into public service motivation and law has been previously conducted, but it has primarily focused on lawyers post-graduation without testing for contributing variables. In order to address this equal justice gap, I utilized an original mixed methods approach to investigate the level of public service motivation in current law students within one state and determine if external factors might also impact why they are not choosing public service as their fulltime profession
