History of beauty by Umberto Eco( Book )

13 editions published between 2002 and 2017 in English and held by 1,775 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Publisher: What is beauty? What is art? What is taste and fashion? Is beauty something to be observed coolly and rationally or is it something dangerously involving? So begins Umberto Eco's intriguing journey into the aesthetics of beauty, in which he explores the ever-changing concept of the beautiful from the ancient Greeks to today. While closely examining the development of the visual arts and drawing on works of literature from each era, Eco broadens his enquiries to consider a range of concepts, including the idea of love, the unattainable woman, natural inspiration versus numeric formulas, and the continuing importance of ugliness, cruelty, and even the demonic. Professor Eco takes us from classical antiquity to the present day, dispelling many preconceptions along the way and concluding that the relevance of his research is urgent because we live in an age of great reverence for beauty, "an orgy of tolerance, the total syncretism and the absolute and unstoppable polytheism of Beauty." In this, his first illustrated book, Professor Eco offers a layered approach that includes a running narrative, abundant examples of painting and sculpture, and excerpts from writers and philosophers of each age, plus comparative tables. A true road map to the idea of beauty for any reader who wishes to journey into this wonderful realm with Eco's nimble mind as guide
Turning back the clock : hot wars and media populism by Umberto Eco( Book )

9 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 763 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The time: 2000 to 2005, the years of neoconservatism, terrorism, the twenty-four-hour news cycle, the ascension of Bush, Blair, and Berlusconi, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Umberto Eco's response is a series of essays - which originally appeared in the Italian newspapers La Repubblica and L'espresso - that leaves no slogan unexamined, no innovation unexposed. What led us into this age of hot wars and media populism, and how was it sold to us as progress? Eco discusses such topics as racism, mythology, the European Union, rhetoric, the Middle East, technology, September 11, medieval Latin, television ads, globalization, Harry Potter, anti-Semitism, logic, the Tower of Babel, intelligent design, Italian street demonstrations, fundamentalism, The Da Vinci Code, and magic and magical thinking."--Jacket
Experiences in translation by Umberto Eco( Book )

12 editions published between 2000 and 2015 in English and held by 683 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Translation is not about comparing two languages, Umberto Eco argues, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages." "In this book he draws on his substantial practical experience to identify and discuss some central problems of translation. As he demonstrates, a translation can express an evident deep sense of a text even when violating both lexical and referential faithfulness. Depicting translation as a semiotic task, he uses a wide range of source materials as illustration: the translations of his own and other novels, translations of the dialogue of American films into Italian, and various versions of the Bible. In the second part of his study he deals with translation theories proposed by Jakobson, Steiner, Peirce, and others." "Overall, Eco identifies the different types of interpretive acts that count as translation. A new typology emerges, based on his insistence on a common-sense approach and the necessity of taking a critical stance."--Jacket

The book of legendary lands by Umberto Eco( Book )

14 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in English and held by 520 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the epic poets of antiquity to contemporary writers of science fiction, from the authors of the Holy Scriptures to modern raconteurs of fairy tales, writers and storytellers through the ages have invented imaginary and mythical lands, projecting onto them all of our human dreams, ideals, and fears. Writer and cultural critic Umberto Eco leads us on a beautifully illustrated journey through these lands of myth and invention, showing us their inhabitants, the passions that rule them, their heroes and antagonists, and, above all, the importance they hold for us. He explores this human urge to create such places, the utopias and dystopias where our imagination can confront things that are too incredible or challenging for our limited real world

"Shortly after his father's death, Gianni Orzan reaches the disturbing conclusion that his father did not love him. Aloof and dismissive, Maurizio Orzan seldom had anything to say to his son. Moreover, he was a staunch fascist." "Or so Gianni thought. Then comes the day he's contacted by a complete stranger who has a disquieting familiarity with his life. In what amounts to kidnapping, the stranger pursues an urgent mission: to convince Gianni that the father he knew was an illusion: that Maurizio was, in fact, a double agent for the KGB." "What is Gianni to believe? If this stranger's revelations are true, they threaten to destroy Gianni's steadfast beliefs about his father's shameful, self-created identity and promise to send his life crashing down around him"--Jacket

Fiat : the secrets of an epoch by Giorgio Garuzzo( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 351 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is an authentic historical document, supported by extensive analytical information, in which former Fiat top manager Giorgio Garuzzo passionately recounts his experience within Fiat between 1976 and 1996. It is a narrative from the inside that sheds new light on events that have remained cloaked in mystery: the arrival and departure of Carlo De Benedetti, the "march of the forty thousand", the sacking of Vittorio Ghidella, the clashes between Umberto Agnelli and Cesare Romiti, the Group's involvement in the "clean hands" scandal, the role of Gianni Agnelli and his relationships with his brother and Cesare Romiti and the intervention of Mediobanca. Garuzzo discusses the issues connected with the range of cars and marques, touching on major themes of national or international relevance that were unrelated to Fiat but nonetheless conditioned its activities: terrorism and the unmanageability of the factories, inflation, the devaluation of the lira, the role of the trade unions and the General Confederation of Italian Industry, Japanese competition and European integration

In the name of the son : the life of Jesus in art, from the nativity to the passion by Vittorio Sgarbi( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 143 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the late medieval period through the Renaissance and the Baroque era, the task of conferring an image onto Christ--whose physical aspect was never described in Scripture--fell to artists, who depicted him at every stage of life and in a multitude of roles. In the 350 images in this lavishly illustrated volume, Vittorio Sgarbi considers the variety and power of these portrayals: depictions of joy, suffering, anger, surprise, unmistakable judgment, mercy, weakness, gentleness, friendship, and even whimsy. The result moves beyond art to explore the fact that it was the image of the Son, and not the Father, that amplified the words of Scripture
Landscapes of memory : trauma, space, history by Patrizia Violi( Book )

5 editions published in 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since Auschwitz, and more and more frequently today, places that were theatres of mass suffering and other atrocities are becoming common features of our cultural landscape. What should we do with these places? Keep them as they were, to remind us of what actually took place there, as ideal museums of past evils? Or should we transform them and, if so, into which forms and according to which principles? Which pasts do these places transmit, and how? This volume uses an innovative semiotic methodology to analyse selected key trauma sites. The author demonstrates that these places can become, once properly interrogated, privileged observatories capable of throwing light upon the many different conflicts, forms of social control, and power relationships that underlie any politics of memory. The selfsame notions of trauma and memory become, in this way, rewritten in quite a different light: far from any kind of naturalistic definition, they emerge as painful "knots" within which many of the most crucial questions in the contemporary world are intertwined. --
Candida Höfer : libraries by Candida Höfer( Book )

1 edition published in 2019 in English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This striking book shows the world's most beautiful libraries through Candida Höfer's mesmerizing photographs. No one photographs spaces quite like Candida Höfer and no one has captured better the majesty, stillness, and eloquence of libraries. Traveling around the world, Höfer shows the exquisite beauty to be found in order, repetition, and form--rows of books, lines of desks, soaring shelves, and even stacks of paper create patterns that are both hypnotic and soothing. Photographed with a large-format camera and a small aperture, these razor-sharp images of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Escorial in Spain, Villa Medici in Rome, the Hamburg University library, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris, and the Museo Archeologico in Madrid, to name a few, communicate more than just the superb architecture. Glowing with subtle color and natural light, Höfer's photographs, while devoid of people, shimmer with life and remind us again and again that libraries are more than just repositories for books. Umberto Eco's essay about his own attachment to libraries is the perfect introduction to an otherwise wordless, but sublimely reverent journey
