The romantic complications of various residents of Renaissance Italy, notably the two good friends Proteus and Valentine, who both fall in love with Silvia, daughter of the Duke of Milan, who has been promised to another. The two become rivals, Proteus forgets his old love, Julia, and thwarts Valentine's plan to elope with Silvia, which leads to Valentine's banishment, whereupon Silva flees the city and escapes to the forest to find him. Meanwhile, in Verona, Julia decides to join her lover Proteus in Milan and, dressed in boy's clothes so she will not be harmed on the journey, discovers Proteus' love for Silvia and contrives to become his page boy -- Sebastian -- until she can decide upon a course of action. They all meet in the forest
