Axé Bahia : the power of art in an Afro-Brazilian metropolis( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Axe Bahia' examines the unique cultural role played by Salvador, the coastal capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia. An internationally renowned center of Afro-Brazilian culture, Salvador has been a vibrant and important hub of African-inspired artistic practices in Latin America since the 1940s. This volume represents the most comprehensive investigation in the United States of Bahian arts to date and features essays by eighteen international scholars. While adding to popular understandings of core expressions of African heritage, such as the religion Candomble, the essays explore in depth the complexities of race and cultural affiliation in Brazil and the provocative ways in which artists have experienced and responded creatively to prevailing realities of Afro-Brazilian identity in Bahia. Lavishly illustrated, the book features works by artists ranging from modernists, among them Mario Cravo Neto, Rubem Valentim, and Pierre Verger, to contemporary artists Rommulo Vieira Conceicao, Caetano Dias, Helen Salomao, Ayrson Heraclito, and others-including a stunning array of sculpture, painting, photography, video, and installation art. The exhibition was part of the Getty's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative.00Exhibition: Fowler Museum at UCLA, Los Angeles, USA (24.09.2017?15.04.2018)

Jorge Guinle is one of the most important late 20th century artists born in Brazil. His skill in the use of colors lifted him to iconic status. His works, though representative of contemporary Brazilian art have not been well documented. Jorge Guinle, alongside Antonio Dias, Cicero Dias, Iberé Camargo are contemporary masters. His untimely death in 1987, left only 500 oil on canvas paintings and hundreds of designs, these, although very important, little is known of them. Guinle is part of the Generation 80, having participated in the famous exhibition of Parque Lage that created a rupture and caused the return to painting. Guinle was an icon to his peers and has remained so among the young artists of today. The book also contains an anthology of the texts that the artist wrote which provide insight into his work and the period of time

He has lived for short or long stays, in Campina Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Milan, New York, Nepal, Cologne, Karlshue, where he has conformed and reconfigured many workshops. Presently he has 3 workshops opened: in Milan, Cologne and Rio de Janeiro. The atelies (workshops) of Antonio Dias are never regarded as a refuge but as places from which he thinks the world and how to intervene it. "A dynamic that means to live vividly the circuit. What is seen as a set of spaces to work constituted for itself over time is more than a collection, it is a private workshop circuit. Subsidiaries in this transit through artistic circuit, these spaces make you think how, for Antonio Davis, the circuit is the workshop." (Our translation) --Verso cover
