In this melodrama set in the early Victorian period, a singer takes the blame for her upper class lover when he forges a cheque, and is transported from England to Parramatta women's prison. It is an unusual combination of elements, combining drama with songs and music, social criticism (the hypocrisy of the upper classes) with some Brechtian devices while accommodating with a characteristic visual flair, the producer's imperative to provide a starring vehicle for Zarah Leander
