The mourners : tomb sculptures from the court of Burgundy by Sophie Jugie( Book )

12 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 390 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During the late Middle Ages, the Dukes of Burgundy were the wealthiest and most powerful aristocrats in northern Europe, controlling an expanse of territory that included all of modern Belgium and much of northern France. The Dukes commissioned sculptors of great renown to decorate and celebrate their magnificent court in Dijon. Working in a studio presided over by Claus Sluter (Netherlandish, c. 1360-1406), these sculptors created monuments for the ducal family that rivaled contemporary Italian works." "This book provides an in-depth study of the twin summits of the achievement of these artists - sculptures from the tombs of Philip the Bold (1342-1404) and his son, John the Fearless (1371-1419). These extraordinary marble and alabaster tombs serve as platforms for the ducal figures, who rest atop fully carved arcades similar to those in a medieval cloister. Within the spaces of the arcades, the artists carved the individual monks in procession. Only a little more than two feet high, each monk is a miniature embodiment of late medieval devotion. Shown in various states of mourning, they move in perpetual procession beneath the marble bodies of their rulers." "Accompanying the first major traveling exhibition of these recently restored sculptures, The Mourners explores the religious and historical context of these evocative works and illuminates their remarkable artistic sophistication and craftsmanship."--Jacket

"This catalogue accompanies an exhibition commemorating the sixth centenary of the death of Philip the Bold (1342-1404) of the house of Valois, Duke of Burgundy and brother of the King of France, at the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Dijon and the Cleveland Museum of Art." "Comprising the most recent scholarship in this field, this catalogue definitively examines the artistic culture of late medieval Burgundy. It also traces the influence of this major artistic center by evoking the school of sculpture engendered by the work of Sluter and by presenting some of the rarest paintings that have come down to us."--BOOK JACKET

7 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in French and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The retables of the Chartreuse of Champmol( Book )

3 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Less famous than the tombs of Philip the Bold and John the Fearless, the retables made for the Charterhouse of Champmol in Dijon are equally dazzling exemplars of the artistic patronage of the dukes of Burgundy. Executed between 1390 and 1399 by two Flemish artists, the sculptor Jacques de Baerze and painter Melchior Broederlam, the Retables of the Crucifixion and Saints and Martyrs both shimmer with the splendour of their gilded surfaces embellished by countless punched motifs and refined painted decorations. Comprehensive restoration carried out between 2011 and 2013 has reinstated their beauty. The knowledge gained during earlier studies of Broederlam's painted panels in the Retable of the Crucifixion has been significantly extended by new scientific imagery, identification of the different types of wood used and analysis of the polychromy of the sculptures. This book tells the fascinating account of this restoration which, founded on a cohesive multi-disciplinary approach, has resulted in a better understanding of the commission, creation and history of these two altarpieces, as beautiful as they are complex."--Page 4 of cover
