9 editions published between 1999 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 493 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Artistry and social history merge in this engaging look at fabulous fashions of the post-World War II era and the influential designers who created them. Here are the fashion titans - Chanel, Dior, Armani, Rykiel, and other greats - who dress the most glamorous and powerful women in the world and the styles that are then eagerly embraced by women everywhere." "Spotlighting thirty-five international, iconic fashion greats from France, the United States, England, Italy, Germany, and Japan, an industry insider traces the development of women's fashions in the modern era - from 1947 to the present. Decade by decade, through ever-changing shifts from lower to higher hemlines, bright colors to neutrals, soft to padded shoulders, pointed to natural breasts, every style is shown. The author outlines the social climate that fostered each trend and helped define who we are or want to be - as expressed by the clothes we wear. Profiles of the designers focus on their individual contributions to fashion and analyze the progression of each career, giving readers a fresher understanding of the creative process that drives the fascinating world of fashion"--Jacket

Couture confessions : fashion legends in their own words by Pamela Golbin( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Late legendary couturiers of modern fashion speaking eloquently about life, design, and inspiration. Vionnet, Chanel, Dior, Saint Laurent, McQueen?these names define haute couture, and long after the designers have passed away, their influence on fashion continues to be profound. In an exceptional compilation of the original words of these couturiers, Couture Confessions provides a unique and in-depth look at the lives and work of these fashion icons. In this engaging, beautifully designed book, Pamela Golbin, acclaimed chief curator of twentieth-century fashion and textiles at Paris?s Mus?e des Arts D?coratifs, has ingeniously constructed conversations in the designers? own words that highlight their compelling personal stories as well as essential fashion "moments"?from designers Paul Poiret, Crist?bal Balenciaga, Madame Gr?s, Alexander McQueen, Madeleine Vionnet, and Gabrielle Chanel to Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Jeanne Lanvin, Pierre Balmain, and Christian Dior. Featuring striking illustrations by internationally recognized illustrator Yann Legendre, each "interview" asks the questions every fashion lover has always wanted to ask, making these legends approachable, human, and ever more inspiring." -- from publisher's websites

Madeleine Vionnet( Book )

4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Famous for the "bias cut," Madeleine Vionnet s sophisticated approach to couture remains a pervasive influence today. Eschewing artificial and restrictive padding and stiffening, she liberated the female form with designs that integrated movement and comfort into women s fashion. She also championed unusual fabrics that were luxurious and sensual yet simple and modern - chiffon, silk, crepe de chine, gabardine, and satin. Her most revolutionary creations - the handkerchief dress, cowl neck, and halter top - cling to and seamlessly move with the wearer. Vionnet s principles of elegance, movement, architectural form, and timeless style continue to inform contemporary fashion." "This lavishly illustrated book showcases Vionnet s daringly original designs photographed especially for this book alongside original sketches and archival images by such icons as Horst and Hoyningen-Huene."--BOOK JACKET
Louis Vuitton/Marc Jacobs by Pamela Golbin( Book )

19 editions published in 2012 in 3 languages and held by 190 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This fascinating publication presents the roles two men have played in turning a small workshop in nineteenth-century Paris into one of the most successful and recognized brands in the world. Known for both craftsmanship and must-have high design, Louis Vuitton the luxury house was started by its eponymous founder in 1854. The first half of this publication traces the innovations by Vuitton, who turned the little-known guild profession of emballeur (packer) into the foremost luxury trunk maker in Paris, with a clientele that included in his lifetime the French nobility as well as the elite of a prosperous empire. Prime and never-before-seen examples of Vuitton's craftsmanship, along with the fashion that went into them, are the highlights of these chapters. The second half of the book examines the role of Marc Jacobs as Louis Vuitton's creative director (since 1997), who took the Louis Vuitton house into a new era with a series of collaborations with artists and designers--such as Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and Stephen Sprouse--as well as designing a line of highly successful and desired clothing for the company. By examining two divergent but often similar careers one hundred years apart, "Louis Vuitton / Marc Jacobs" is not only a layered study of the evolution of a luxury brand in the past 150 years but also a celebration of technical and design innovations in the new century
