Islam, Kurds and the Turkish nation state by Christopher Houston( )

"Can Islamism, as is often claimed, truly unite Muslim Turks and Kurds? This is a volatile and exciting time for a country whose long history has been characterized by dramatic power play. Evolving out of two years of fieldwork in Istanbul, this book examines the fragmenting Islamist political movement in Turkey. As Turkey emerges from a repressive modernizing project, various political identities are emerging and competing for influence. The Islamist movement celebrates the failure of Western liberalism in Turkey and the return of politics based on Muslim ideals. However, this vision is threatened by Kurdish nationalism and the country's chequered past. Is Islamist multiculturalism even possible? The ethnic tensions surfacing in Turkey beg the question whether the Muslim Turks and Kurds can find common ground in religion. The author argues that such unification depends fundamentally upon the flexibility of the rationale behind the Islamist movement's struggle"--Book cover

Kurdistan : crafting of national selves by Christopher Houston( Book )

15 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Kurdistan provides an introduction to and a succinct history of the idea of Kurdistan, the imagined homeland of the Kurds. Christopher Houston examines the historiography, ethnography, and changing political status of the Kurdish regions vis-à-vis the Ottoman and British empires, and considers the responses of Kurds to the nation-building missions of modern Turkey, Iraq, and Iran. These projects, driven by ambitious elites in the modernizing capitals of new nation-states, were accompanied by varying degrees of intolerance toward minority ethnic languages, political institutions, and regional autonomy."--Book cover

Un architetto americano, Louis Sauer by Antonino Saggio( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As one walks the streets of the Philadelphia, Sauer's buildings stand out for the masterly way he calibrates architectural composition and the varied playfulness of his solutions which, through a complex body of intuitively defined rules, one will find the very essence of Sauer's field of action where he interprets the reality of the setting and its surroundings. This book, then, is an enjoyable, lively read, because it proposes a profoundly democratic architecture that opens individuals' minds, leaves room to the end-user's aesthetic sensibility and presupposes a curious, imagining heart
