Lawrence Alma-Tadema by R. J Barrow( Book )

35 editions published between 2001 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 682 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) was one of the finest and most distinctive of the Victorian painters. Dutch-born, he moved to London in 1879, and became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with langorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean sea and sky." "In this original and penetrating study, Rosemary Barrow presents an absorbing and often amusing portrait of an exuberant personality who carved out a brillant career for himself at the heart of London's artistic and cultural elite. But above all she subjects the paintings to a fresh and rigorous scrutiny, revealing that Alma-Tadema was a highly knowledgeable student of antiquity, who made effective use of precise literary and archaeological allusions to play a game of interpretation with his viewers. Time and again the seeming innocence of the scenes he depicts is subverted by a mischievously placed inscription or statue, suggesting to the initiated a darker and usually risque meaning." "Like his contemporaries, Alma-Tadema was neglected after his death, but his paintings are once again admired for their beauty and their mastery of light, colour and texture. With its fresh and intriguing new insights into his personality and intentions, this book now provides a challenging reassessment of a major artist."--Jacket

Gender, identity and the body in Greek and Roman sculpture by R. J Barrow( )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book offers incisive analysis of selected works of ancient art through a critical use of cutting-edge theory from gender studies, body studies, art history and other related fields. The book raises important questions about ancient sculpture and the contrasting responses that the individual works can be shown to evoke. Rosemary Barrow gives close attention to both original context and modern experience, while directly addressing the question of continuity in gender and body issues from antiquity to the early modern period through a discussion of the sculpture of Bernini. Accessible and fully illustrated, her book features new translations of ancient sources and a glossary of Greek and Latin terms. It will be an invaluable resource and focus for debate for a wide range of readers interested in ancient art, gender and sexuality in antiquity, and art history and gender and body studies more broadly

British classical-subject painting 1860-1910 by R. J Barrow( Book )

3 editions published in 1999 in English and Undetermined and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis explores the reception of the classical world in painting from the mid-Victorian period to the second decade of the twentieth century and centres on a detailed examination of the many artists involved and their receptions of antiquity: they include highly acclaimed classical-subject painters (Frederic Leighton, Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Edward Poynter), artists commonly associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement (Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Simeon Solomon and Edward Burne-Jones), two idiosyncratic creative talents (G F Watts and Albert Moore), together with a number of lesser known but still significant painters (notably, Herbert Draper, Arthur Hacker, Solomon J Solomon). My fundamental goals have been to identify and interpret the artists' choices (mostly undiscussed until now) of ancient textual and archaeological source material, to investigate significant relationships between particular works and contemporary literature and society, and through these researches to make better sense of the distinctive oeuvres of the individual artists and of classical-subject painting as a whole. Overall, my aim is to shed new light on the pictorial aspect of the classical tradition in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. My approach is interdisciplinary and brings together data and perspectives from fine art, classics, nineteenth-century literature and cultural history
