The Millennium prize problems( Book )

5 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 289 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Guided by the premise that solving some of the world's most important mathematical problems will advance the field, this book offers a fascinating look at the seven unsolved Millennium Prize problems. This work takes the unprecedented approach of describing these important and difficult problems at the professional level. In announcing the seven problems and a US$7 million prize fund in 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute emphasized that mathematics still constitutes an open frontier with important unsolved problems. The descriptions in this book serve the Institute's mission to "further the beauty, power and universality of mathematical thinking." Separate chapters are devoted to each of the seven problems: the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture, the Hodge Conjecture, the Navier-Stokes Equation, the P versus NP Problem, the Poincaré Conjecture, the Riemann Hypothesis, and Quantum Yang-Mills Theory"--Publisher's website

4 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is Part 1 of a two-volume set. Since Oscar Zariski organized a meeting in 1954, there has been a major algebraic geometry meeting every decade: Woods Hole (1964), Arcata (1974), Bowdoin (1985), Santa Cruz (1995), and Seattle (2005). The American Mathematical Society has supported these summer institutes for over 50 years. Their proceedings volumes have been extremely influential, summarizing the state of algebraic geometry at the time and pointing to future developments. The most recent Summer Institute in Algebraic Geometry was held July 2015 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City

In this lecture Tate explains three of the prize problems and places them in historical context. These are among the most important unsolved problems in pure mathematics: the Riemann Hypothesis, the Conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer, and the "P versus NP?" problem."

The video by the filmmaker F. Tisseyre provides a portrait of CMI, its culture and the people behind it, as well as of the spirit of the CMI Millennium Event. Excerpts from interviews explain the significance of the prize problems and the challenges they pose. The video of T. Gowers' Keynote Address at the CMI Millennium Meeting is a lucid, dynamic presentation of the deep and important question of the relevance of mathematics to society, delivered by one of the best mathematicians of the modern age. The Problems were set forth by two of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, J. Tate and M. Atiyah. The set of two lectures by Tate and Atiyah together comprise a complete description of the Millennium Prize Problems, presented in an entertaining style
