A series of six programmes (Programme 3 is missing) in which Jonathan Miller, Charles Hazlewood and students from the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, create scenes from various operas. There are no sets, costumes or scenery, and a pianist (répétiteur) is used instead of an orchestra. Jonathan directs the singers and adds his interpretations to the performance of excerpts from operas by Mozart (The marriage of Figaro, The magic flute), Britten (A midsummer night's dream), Puccini (La Bohème, Tosca), Monteverdi (The coronation of Poppea), Handel (Rodelinda) and Bizet (Carmen), and a song by Hugo Wolf (No. 10 from Italienisches Liederbuch)
