The Don Camillo stories of Giovannino Guareschi : a humorist portrays the sacred by Alan R Perry( )

13 editions published between 2007 and 2018 in English and held by 1,550 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Giovannino Guareschi (1908-1968) was an Italian journalist, humorist, and cartoonist best known for his short stories featuring the fictional Catholic priest Don Camillo. In this study, Alan R. Perry explores the Don Camillo stories from the perspective of Christian hermeneutics, an approach that offers a unique critical key to unlocking the richness of Guareschi's world-view and creative genius." "The stories and films based on the character of Don Camillo, the cantankerous but beloved priest, and his sidekick, Communist mayor Peppone, continue to entertain viewers and readers to this day. Although set in the Cold War years, the characters' adventures, mishaps, arguments, and reconciliations have a timeless quality, and their actions reflect enduring values. The stories delight, to be sure, but the best of them also force us to stop and think about how Guareschi so powerfully conveyed the Christian message of faith, hope, and love. To appreciate the true genius of Guareschi, Perry argues that we must delve deeper into the underlying spiritual meaning within many of the stories. In reflecting popular understandings of the Christian faith, the Don Camillo tales allow us to experience a sacred awareness of the world, an understanding communicated through everyday objects, gestures, and expressions, and through actual formal religious rites." "The first full-length scholarly examination of the Don Camillo stories, this book offers an appreciation of traditional Italian cultural values as reflected in Guareschi's work and discusses the ways in which those values were contested during the Cold War period."--Jacket

Remembering the Italian Resistance : the holy partisan-martyr and the rhetoric of sacrifice by Alan R Perry( )

3 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The process of sacralization of fallen soldiers was not a new one. Italian Fascism had borrowed but secularized the notion of sanctity surrounding death in order to glorify the dead of World War I. Even earlier Italian Nationalists had championed the necessity of dying for one's country in order that it might continually be regenerated. But, unlike the virile heroic model of soldiers falling on the field of battle, which the Nationalists and Fascists had exalted, the Resistance model of heroic virtue was stoic, passive and enduring in the face of torture and execution. Jesus' Passion and the Martyrdom of Christian saints became the paradigm within which Italians commemorated those who fell in the Resistance to atone for the debacles of Fascism and infuse the new nation with positive expectancy for the future
