Berg's Lulu : Dmitri Tcherniakov (stage director), Kirill Petrenko (music director) - Bayerische Staatsoper - With Marlis Petersen (Lulu)( Visual )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 48 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Kirill Petrenko conducts this new production of Alban Berg's Lulu, directed for stage by Dmitri Tcherniakov and starring the soprano Marlis Petersen (Lulu). Lulu is a femme fatale, a maneater. She marries men and then kills them, one after another, or pushes them to commit suicide. This opera, which mixes forbidden love stories, crimes and decadence of the heroine, is one of the greatest operas of the 20th century. Alban Berg died before he had a chance to bring his third act to an end, and the opera was premiered at the Zurich Opera House in 1937, two years after the composer's death. The piece shocked the audience and was far from being acclaimed by the critics. In 1979, Friedrich Cerha achieved the orchestration of the third act. Alban Berg used the themes from two of Frank Wedekind's plays, Pandora's Box and Earth Spirit, which both were forbidden in Germany. Lulu's philosophical and sociological significance seems to denounce the nonsense of a society in search for modernity, trying to deal with the confusion of the values and the search for the power. The staging of this new production is by one of the greatest Russian stage directors of the moment, Dmitri Tcherniakov, who staged a beautiful Wozzeck at the Bolchoi a few years ago. The conductor, Kirill Petrenko, is the Bayerische Staatsoper's musical director, and Opera Magazine described him as "one of the most passionate [conductors] of his generation". The cast stars coloratura soprano Marlis Petersen, singing Lulu - one of the most important roles of her career - a role that she performed in the greatest opera theatres worldwide. "Recorded in June 2003 at the Zurich Opera Festival, this Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Abduction from the Seraglio) has Dr. Jonathan Miller directing a sublime cast. Malin Hartelius as Constanze is delightful throughout, singing effortlessly and bringing real emotion to the moments of introspection. She and Piotr Beczala, a tenor of enormous verve, make an inspiring couple. The great Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer (Out of Africa, Mephisto) plays the Pasha with astonishing aplomb. French soprano Patricia Petibon offers an impish Blonde whose encounter with Osmin is one of the performance's high points. Her voice is full and assured and her temperament appropriately fiery. Boguslaw Bidzinski's Pedrillo is faultless, while Alfred Muff is deliciously sadistic as Osmin, the harem guard. In a confident reading of the score, conductor Christoph König makes the most of its light and shade to highlight all the instrumental daring of the 26-year old Mozart."--MDT Website

Lulu by Alban Berg( Visual )

5 editions published in 2017 in 3 languages and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A sensuous and impenetrable opera, Berg's masterpiece depicts the burning and sometimes bestial intensity of human relationships through the figure of Lulu, the true femme fatale, bearer of an enigma that haunts us way beyond the end of the opera. Venenous, sibylline, deathly for who approaches her, the dangerous Lulu destroys the established and bourgeois order she evolves in, carrying away with her all certainty, just like the audacious and demanding musical language Berg invented to give form to this unreachable character
