America's first corporate public school : model for education reform? by Carol L Bentley( Book )

In September 1988, the Corporate Community Schools of America (c/csa) opened its first model school in Chicago's North Lawndale, an innercity neighborhood scarred by deprivation, violence, and hopelessness. After briefly describing the school's laboratory approach, this report defines C/CSA's philosophy, goals, and educational plan and refers to research supporting the c/csa model. The c/csa is a not-for-profit coalition of business executives, community leaders, and concerned educators working together to reform U.S. urban public education. The c/csa educational plan differs from the usual school-business arrangements by focusing on preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school instead of job training; facilitating corporate, educator, and community participation on boards; providing ongoing financial commitment; and participating with key groups in urban reform efforts. The plan's benefits include focusing resources effectively, taking full advantage of corporate expertise, and facilitating a systemwide impact in education. The North Lawndale school serves predominantly Afro-American and Hispanic students, operates year-round (except for 3 weeks in August), is open from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. daily, and provides breakfast, lunch, snacks, and transportation as needed. The school's philosophy is that all students can be powerful lifelong learners. Founding principles, including the necessity for a strong principal, are described, along with the sound, performance-based management techniques used to ensure success. Implications and 1989-90 goals are also discussed. (Mlh)

Mid-Western Educational Researcher is a scholarly journal that publishes research-based articles addressing a full range of educational issues. The journal also publishes literature reviews, theoretical and methodological discussions that make an original contribution to the research literature, and feature columns. Each year, one issue is a program for the association's annual conference. Special theme issues during the 8-year period have included multicultural education (1992), midwestern history (1995), "The Bell Curve" (1996), regression analyses (1996), and the Internet in the classroom (1998). An Investigation of the Relationship of Achievement Motivation with Achievement in Mathematics for Students in the United States and Japan by Delwyn L Harnisch( Book )

A study was made of cross-cultural patterns of achievement motivation in relationship to the mathematics achievement of Japanese and American boys and girls approximately 16 years of age. Sample sizes were 9,582 for the United States subjects (specifically, from Illinois) and 1,700 for the participants from Japan. Data came from performance on the High School Mathematics Test, which was administered during the spring term of the 1981-82 testing cycle. The test consisted of 60 items covering a range of mathematical topics, including algebra, geometry, modern math, data interpretation, and probability. A background questionnaire including two measures of achievement motivation (success/failure attributions and test anxiety) was completed by all students during the testing session. Results of correlational analyses revealed a number of associations between (1) gender, test comfort, and attribution variables; and (2) mathematics achievement performance in both within- and between-country comparisons. Specifically discussed are between- and within-country differences in the relationship between gender and mathematics performance, the relationship between test comfort and mathematics achievement performance, and between-country differences in relationships of attribution variables to mathematics achievement performance. It was concluded that current measures of achievement attribution are inadequate to assess motivational patterns in Japan, and that the much higher test scores of the Japanese students do not justify new policy recommendations, given the basic differences between the two countries

The development of electronic distance education delivery systems in the United States : recurring and emerging themes in history and philosophy of education by Michael Buckland( Book )

This paper presents a history of electronic distance education in the United States. Three broad categories of delivery systems are described: (1) over-the-air open circuit systems such as vhf-uhf stations, microwave, instructional television fixed service (itfs), communications satellites, and educational radio and television; (2) through-the-wire, or closed circuit systems such as intraschool closed-circuit television, cable television, telephone applications, and campus information networks; and (3) direct physical delivery, including hand-carried videotapes, cassettes, discs, mail, videotape recordings, and library materials. Discussion focuses primarily on over-the-air and through-the-wire delivery systems, with emphasis on relevant U.S. government legislation. The history begins in 1844 with the telegraph, continues through the telegraph printer, the first transatlantic telegraph cable (1869), telephones (1876), the phonograph (1877), and through 1896 with the first patent for radio obtained by Marconi. Twentieth century advancements in communications technology are discussed in detail. Federal legislation noted includes the 1912 and 1927 Radio Acts, the development of the Federal Radio Commission, predecessor of the Federal Communications Commission (fcc), and other standards adopted first for the regulation of the radio spectrum and then for the regulation of the television spectrum. Also included in this discussion are the development of national organizations and agencies, convened in response to special interest groups and to specific uses for the media. Two chronologies are provided: the development and use of technology from 1812 to 1990, and legislation and philanthropy in distance education from 1910 to 1984. (25 references) (db)

Study of Differentiated Teaching Methods Used by First-Year Special Educators by Patricia R Renick( Book )

This study seeks to determine whether first-year special educators use their knowledge of differentiated teaching strategies in their classrooms. It also seeks to understand what conditions within school systems support or hinder attempts by special educators to implement these strategies. Participants in the study included four first-year special educators, one teacher and one tutor who are middle school educators, and one teacher and one tutor who work in elementary schools. The study included personal observations in each participant's classroom and semi-structured interviews. Three questions guided the analysis of interview data: How did the first-year teachers come to know their students individual needs? What specific teaching strategies did they use to provide for different abilities levels? And What kind of support (materials and supervisory feedback) did they receive for these differentiated strategies? Special first-year teachers share with their regular educator counterparts pedagogical concerns, lack of administrative support, and the need for both materials and appropriate planning times. Unique to special educators is the pedagogical demand for differentiated instruction according to the individualized plan provided for each student, which continues to drive the pedagogical strategies of these first-year educators. Thus the university training for differentiation continues to shape their actual classroom instruction. (Mah)
