Postcards and viewbooks collected for the study of Asian art and architecture. Emphasis is on Japanese, Chinese, and Buddhist art, but the collection also includes some items from India, Korea, Southeast Asia, and the Philippines. Images show Buddhist temples, shrines, and sculpture; tombs, palaces, and castles; scroll paintings, calligraphy, and woodblock prints; ceramics, porcelain, and other decorative arts. Also included are portraits of samurai, geishas, dancers, Noh actors, and other Asians dressed in traditional clothing; landscapes, ethnographic photographs, and other early views of French Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos), including Angkor Wat. Of special note is a collection of 134 souvenir viewbooks and postcard sets from Japan, many published before or during World War II, including two sets of cartoons published by Gunji Yubin depicting Japanese soldiers in humorous situations. Postcards of Japan album contains views, some hand-colored, of Kamakura, Enoshima, Tokyo, Kyoto, and other locations, circa 1910
