Promising practices in civic education by Donald W Robinson( Book )

5 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The survey reported in this volume is one of four separate projects for an integrated study of civic education financed by the Danforth Foundation. Visits were made to 83 schools in 27 States selected from a list of 300 nominations. The selected junior and senior high schools were reputed to have promising practices in citizenship education. They represented all geographical areas--inner-city, suburban, and rural--and were located in communities with populations from under 2,000 to more than a million. The first three chapters of this report identify the project team's beliefs concerning contemporary educational challenges, goals for civic education, and methods for approaching these goals. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 include descriptions of school practices, arbitrarily grouped according to the citizenship goals they most strongly exemplify. Chapters 7 through 11 discuss administrative arrangements and other factors that facilitate civic education. Finally, chapter 12 presents a restatement of civic education ideals in the light of the practices observed in the schools. (Mf)

Verdict on America; readings from textbooks of other countries by Donald W Robinson( Book )

3 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study of the treatment of contemporary America in textbooks of other countries reveals the impressions gained by secondary school students in those countries from textbook reading and discloses ways in which these books mention American character, culture, and institutions. Passages selected from secondary level textbooks of 19 countries in various parts of the world are presented with brief comment and analysis. Selections are grouped in chapters entitled The American Way of Life, Cities and Their Problems, Minorities, The Political Process, The American Dollar at Home, The American Dollar Abroad, Peace and War, and The American Character. While not to be considered a definitive sample of attitudes toward the United States held by the rest of the world, the collection does present a wide spectrum of views of modern America and points out differences as an aid to careful and critical thought about American problems. An investigation of the effect of an enriched basic liberal arts program on the educational development of the junior college liberal arts transfer student by Lorraine Bradt Dennis( Book )

2 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A demonstration and evaluation of one means of meeting the needs of average and lower ability students was conducted at marymount college. The program was an enriched liberal arts curriculum. Students were grouped on the basis of exposure to the enriched program and compared with a group not exposed to such a program. Comparisons were made on--(1) changes on "sequential tests of educational progress" test scores from entrance to graduation in mathematics, science, reading, social studies, and writing, (2) dropout rate, (3) incidence of transfer to a 4-year institution of higher learning, (4) performance at the 4-year institution, and (5) persistence at the transfer institution through the junior year. The investigators concluded that the enrichment program at marymount college might be credited with increased student persistence as demonstrated by a markedly decreased dropout rate. Furthermore, students exposed to such a program did not seem to evidence the initial drop in grade-point average at the transfer institution which has been characteristic of the typical junior college transfer.
