This film, over three hours long and consisting of two parts released one after the other the same year -- Eight War-Torn Years and The Dawn -- details the trials and tribulations of a family around the Second Sino-Japanese War, in pre-war, wartime and post-war 1930's China. When the family's village is taken over by the occupying Japanese army, one son, Zhongliang, leaves his parents, wife, and young son to join a medic group for the Chinese Army. The other son, Zhangmin, goes into hiding to protect his family. The focus shifts back and forth from the brothers' parents and Zhongliang's wife and son to Zhongliang's return to Shanghai, newfound life of luxury in a town not too far away, and marriage into a wealthy bourgeois family

"Daybreak (Tianming): Perhaps more than any other director working at that time, Sun Yu consistently sought to portray the working class affected by feudalism and imperialism. In Daybreak, Li plays a villager forced into prostitution in Shanghai, while her lover (Gao) joins the revolutionaries. After she helps him flee the authorities, she is sentenced to death by a firing squad, a scene of devastating impact."--Container
