"This heartrending masterpiece by Kenji Mizoguchi about the give-and-take between life and art marked the director's first use of the hypnotic long takes and eloquent camera movements that would come to define his films. Kikunosuke (Shotaro Janayagi), the adopted son of legendary kabuki actor, who is striving to achieve stardom by mastering female roles, turns to his infant brother's wet nurse for support and affection -- and she soon gives up everything for her beloved's creative glory. Offering a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of kabuki theater in the late nineteenth century, The Story of the Last Chrysamthemum provides a critique of the oppression of women and the sacrifices required of them, and represents the pinnacle of Mitzoguchi's early career" -- Back of container

1 edition published in 2011 in Japanese and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1964 (box incorrectly says 1963) Japan was in the midst of its long period of high economic growth and Tokyo was busy revamping its urban infrastructure. When most were celebrating the economic expansion, Noriaki Tsuchimoto focused his analytical gaze on the life of one taxi driver, Kikuo Kawasaki. What he saw were miserable and unhealthy labor conditions, a Tokyo littered with traffic jams and construction work, a city where traffic accidents were multiplying and pedestrians unsafe. Coupling the tense visuals with impressive music, Tsuchimoto likens this supposedly new Tokyo to a skeletal wreck

Utamaro and his five women = Utamaro o meguru gonin no onna by Kenji Mizoguchi( Visual )

2 editions published in 1946 in Japanese and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The legendary 18th century woodblock print artist Utamaro Kitagawa was famous for his dynamic drawings of women which upset traditional aesthetics. The film shows how the artist's contact with one man and five women leads to experiences illustrating the value of self-fulfilment. The portrayal of Utamaro also reflects Mizoguchi's democratic view of the artist as craftsman. Utamaro's refusal of compromise in his art is paralleled by the self-emancipation of the women although their case histories tend to obscure the unifying theme: Utamaro's moral and artistic dilemmas as an artist. This film contains a number of instances of Mizoguchi's deployment of the one-scene, one-shot method. The oblique message of the equality of women was appropriate for the democratic ethos favoured by the post-war occupying forces
