Street level : Mark Bradford, William Cordova and Robin Rhode by Mark Bradford( Book )

4 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For these artists, found objects and performative gestures help build the foundation for their art, which includes painting, works on paper, sculpture, photography, video, installation, and other mixed media. Together they reinterpret urban vernacular to engage critical issues of class, geography, and race in contemporary society. Mark Bradford is best known for abstract collages made largely from accumulated signage taken from the streets of South Central Los Angeles that he tears, bleaches, sands, and embellishes to reconfigure the urban landscape. William Cordova works primarily with found paper and everyday objects to create drawings and mixed-media installations - some materials and iconography such as books, speakers, tires and albums are recurring images that allude both to his Peruvian heritage and modern urban subcultures. Inspired by graffiti, film, sports, and hip-hop, as well as his personal experiences in the rough neighbourhoods of Johannesburg, Robin Rhode's performances involve the build-up and erasure of chalk drawings on the walls of public spaces and galleries that playfully transform his renderings into illusory three-dimensional objects through the artist's physical engagement
Robin Rhode : memory is the weapon by Robin Rhode( Book )

2 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Robin Rhode's trademark is the wall. His works are influenced by urban music culture, film, popular sports, youth culture, and traditional South African storytelling. They are created in the public space, on walls. It's not about the statement that he leaves behind on the street, though it's about the process. Hence, in his visual short stories he captures the links between drawing, performance, and sculpture, step by step. No body without a line, no line without a body. With drawing as his starting point, he develops increasingly complex photographic works, digital animations, performances, sculptures, and works on paper, which comprise a content-related balancing act between South African history, culture, mindset, signs, and codes and the abstract language of European-American art history. This richly illustrated catalogue accompanies Rhode's first solo show in twelve years in Germany. Besides pictures of the art itself, the book also contains an interview, an introductory essay, and poems by South African authors, to which his work often refers

2 editions published in 2005 in Undetermined and English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tres escenarios is the first in a series of exhibitions planned by the CAAM under the new definition of tri-continentality, with the participation of Ricardo Basbaum from Brazil, Pedro Déniz from Spain, and the South African Robin Rhode, who used Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as the setting for their ephemeral interventions. The exhibition was intended to interact with the museum and the city, producing an art that is close to that of the performance as a synonym for experience. Each one of these artists carried out a series of interventions in the Vegueta district and the interior of the San Antonio Abad showrooms which were meant to impact directly on the daily life of Canary Islands citizens and on the perceptions of the spectators who visited the museum show space

Robin Rhode : the geometry of colour by Robin Rhode( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For Robin Rhode great art is inextricably connected to a preparedness to think the eternal. If Rhode has always moved between viscera and abstraction, the object and its erasure, we now encounter a critical shift, for in this new cycle of works the artist finds himself compelled to overcome the inhibitive polarities in-and-through which we construct meaning and value in our lives. In recognising the failure of the deconstructive project, in realising that in this divisive and cruel world reason can no longer save us, Rhode now seeks through colour and geometry a very different grail.0Most famously shot against a ruined wall in Westbury, Johannesburg, Rhode?s images cling nostalgically-yet-hopelessly to the particularity of a place in the very moment that longing is canceled out. Symptoms of exile, screeds for loss, they evoke a sentiment shared by the great Palestinian humanist, Edward Said, for whom ?A part of something is for the foreseeable future going to be better than all of it. Fragments over wholes. Restless nomadic activity over the settlements of held territory. Criticism over resignation ... limited independence over the status of clients. Attention, alertness, focus. To do as others do, but somehow stand apart. To tell a story in pieces, as it is.?
