Dopo aver rotto il telecomando a seguito di un litigio con l'inquieta sorella Jennifer, David riceve la visita di uno strano tecnico televisivo che lo dota di un particolare telecomando in grado di catapultare il ragazzo e la sorella all'interno della fiction. Trovatisi improvvisamente all'interno della città di Pleasantville nelle sembianze di due personaggi, Bud e Mary Sue Parker, David e Jennifer cominciano a vivere la loro nuova vita in bianco e nero. Ma l'intraprendenza sessuale di Jennifer provoca un trauma nel mondo ripetitivo e immobile di Pleasantville: il perfetto equilibrio viene turbato, la reiterazione esasperata di azioni, sensazioni e giornate sempre uguali a se stesse rende possibile un'alterazione decisiva che provoca un mutamento nella stessa composizione cromatica della città. A Pleasantville compaiono, infatti, i colori. Dapprima sui fiori, poi sugli oggetti, infine anche sulle persone, provocando una sorta di razzismo da parte degli uomini in bianco e nero nei confronti degli individui che progressivamente mostrano la compiutezza del loro cromatismo umano e non più virtuale. Accusato insieme al signor Johnson, pittore dilettante, di essersi servito di colori proibiti per dipingere un grosso murales, David viene processato dal sindaco della città, ma durante la sua difesa il giovane riesce a far ammettere la propria umanità anche ai pochi abitanti della città ancora rimasti in bianco e nero, trasformando così Pleasantville in un ambiente scintillante di una gamma vastissima di colori differenti
