Edgard Varèse : composer : sound sculptor : visionary by Felix Meyer( Book )

12 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 459 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume documents the exhibition mounted by the Paul Sacher Foundation and the Tinguely Museum in Basel. It contains brief discussions of all the items on display and more than two hundred color illustrations, shedding light on Varese's life and works and documenting his ties to the sister arts. It also contains statements from leading contemporary artists and composers as well as thirty-two essays by musicologists, art historians, and eye witnesses. The essays illuminate the way-stations in Varese's life through an examination of its musical and historical contexts, and convey fresh insights into his music, ideas, and influence on the basis of documents from his estate. The result is a multifaceted picture of a figure whose life's work has fascinated and inspired myriad musicians, from John Cage to Pierre Boulez and Frank Zappa."--Jacket
Elliott Carter : a centennial portrait in letters and documents by Felix Meyer( Book )

10 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 316 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Elliott Carter (born 1908) is widely regarded as one of the foremost composers of our time. On the occasion of Carter's one-hundredth birthday, this volume presents a large selection of previously unpublished letters, lectures, and facsimiles of music manuscripts from the Paul Sacher Foundation and other archives. The extensively annotated documents provide new insights into Carter's life as an American composer in an international context, tracing his tentative beginnings in the 1920s and 30s, his steady rise to fame, and his artistic friendships with some of the leading musicians of the last hundred years."--Jacket
Crosscurrents : American and European music in interaction, 1900-2000 by Felix Meyer( Book )

8 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Throughout the 20th century, exchanges between North America and Europe were vital to the development of musical life on both sides of the Atlantic, shifting from a postcolonial imbalance of cultural power at the opening of the century to an increasing sense of encounters between equals. There were productive exchanges of all sorts and in both directions, with ever-shifting dynamics over time. American musicians studied in Europe; European musicians visited the U.S. or were driven into exile there, orchestras and soloists crisscrossed the ocean to give concert tours; music festivals attracted an international clientele; and printed music, recordings, journalism, radio, and eventually the internet flowed freely within a transatlantic circuit. This volume, based on the papers presented at an international conference held at Harvard University and the University of Munich (2008/2009), explores how music and musicians - both Europeans and Americans - have moved across cultures, creating mutual benefit as well as occasional misunderstanding
