Qualche tempo dopo, tuttavia, Nancy e il violento Billy Sykes, appartenenti alla banda di Fagin, lo riacciuffano e lo riconducono dal capo proprio quando Oliver ha ricevuto un incarico di fiducia dal signor Brownlow, il quale rimane molto deluso a causa di quella che crede una fuga da parte del ragazzo. Sykes intende utilizzare Oliver per compiere una rapina a casa di Brownlow, ma la rapina fallisce.
