Othello by Oliver Parker( Visual )

9 editions published between 1995 and 2013 in English and German and held by 1,580 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Venice during 1570, Desdemona, daughter of a powerful nobleman, elopes with Othello, a proud Moor celebrated as the city's most awesome warrior. Iago, who has served alongside Othello for a decade, is angered when the general chooses another lieutenant, Cassio, as his second in command. In retribution, Iago sabotages Cassio's promotion and convinces Othello that the handsome officer is cuckolding him. Othello writhes under the tortures Iago has created, and in a fit of jealousy smothers Desdemona, who caresses her beloved husband as she dies. Unfortunately, as adapted by director Parker, this is Shakespeare Lite, a primer for those who refuse to wrap themselves in his poetry, but do want to know what happened. The result is a movie that will not give viewers much of an idea of Shakespeare's play, and may inadvertently lead to ideas about interracial love that were not much on Shakespeare's mind. The audience must think, "There, but for the grace of God, go we," or the production has not worked

"Being the adventures of a young man who couldn't resist pretty girls, or a bit of the old ultra-violence, who went to jail, was re-conditioned, and came out a different young man. Or was he?" So might opine your humble narrator, Alex. Alex and his droogs Georgie, Dim, and Pete are bored. Alex loves Ludwig van, milk bars, and mayhem. One night a botched burglary ends in murder. Apprehended by the police, Alex is tried, sentenced, and sent to prison for fourteen years. Two years into his sentence, he signs up for The Ludovico Treatment, and is released as cured. However, the world is a harsh and violent place, and now Alex is unable to defend himself. O my brothers, what will happen to poor Alex now?

"Stomping, whomping, stealing, singing, tap-dancing, violating. Derby-topped hooligan Alex has a good time {u2013} at the tragic expense of others. His journey from amoral punk to brainwashed proper citizen and back again forms the dynamic arc of Stanley Kubrick's future-shock vision of Anthony Burgess' novel. Controversial when first released, A Clockwork Orange ... still entices, shocks and holds us in its grasp."--Container
