Qui viene raccolto da una donna di colore che decide di allevarlo e lo fa visitare subito da un medico: gli vengono riscontrati tutti i problemi fisici di un ottantenne e si da per scontato che non avrà vita lunga. Invece Benjamin ringiovanisce di anno in anno e le sue condizioni fisiche migliorano progressivamente. All’età di 10 anni, mentre il suo aspetto è quello di una persona anziana, incontra Daisy che riconosce in lui il bambino che in effetti è e diventa la sua compagna di giochi. Qualche anno più tardi, annoiato dalla vita dell’ospizio e ansioso di fare nuove esperienze, trova lavoro su un rimorchiatore sul quale presterà servizio per diversi anni. Intanto il padre di Benjamin, che negli anni ha seguito a distanza le avventure del figlio, essendo ormai in fin di vita gli confessa la verità sulla sua nascita e gli lascia in eredità la fiorente industria di bottoni di cui è proprietario. Benjamin però corre a Parigi dove in un ospedale è ricoverata Daisy a causa di un grave incidente che pone fine alla sua carriera di danzatrice. Dopo l’ennesimo rifiuto, Benjamin, che ormai ha l’aspetto di un uomo di circa 40 anni, fa ritorno a New Orleans. È ancora nell’ospizio che, qualche mese più tardi, incontra Daisy e finalmente sboccia l’amore. I due sanno di avere poco tempo a disposizione, visto il progressivo ringiovanimento del protagonista destinato a rendere impossibile la relazione, e vivono in maniera estremamente intensa i pochi anni che li vedono “coetanei”. Quando Daisy rimane incinta decidono di tenere la bambina anche se Benjamin si rende perfettamente conto che non potrà esserne il padre. Sarà proprio lui, per il primo compleanno della figlia, ad abbandonare tutto rendendosi irreperibile. Daisy si risposa e incontrerà Benjamin solo in vecchiaia: il protagonista è ormai un ragazzino di 12 anni affetto da demenza senile. Da quel momento Daisy passerà tutto il suo tempo in compagnia di Benjamin vedendolo ringiovanire sempre più fino al momento della morte che lo coglierà, neonato, tra le braccia della donna amata
