De fonctionnaire indigène au bureau de poste de Stanleyville, en passant par plusieurs séjours en prison pour vol ou pour incitation au désordre, il deviendra en l'espace de quelques années (1957-1960) l'homme le plus vilipendé de cette période intensive de la guerre froide. Le 30 juin 1960, jour de l'indépendance du Congo, en présence du roi Baudouin, souverain des Belges, du général Jeanssens et de l'évêque local, Patrice Lumumba prit la parole: "Congolais, Congolaises. Combattants de l'indépendance aujourd'hui victorieux...". Devenu Premier Ministre de l'un des pays les plus riches d'Afrique, son destin de héros tragique était tout tracé, son assassinat dès lors programmé. Il ne restera que trois mois au pouvoir. Le 5 septembre 1960, Lumumba qui s'est tourné vers l'URSS, est révoqué par le président du Congo puis arrêté alors qu'il essaie de rejoindre ses partisans. Il est assassiné le 17 janvier 1961, ses assassins n'avaient plus alors qu'à faire disparaître son corps."
