Tita (Lumi Cavazos) werden die Rezepte buchstäblich in die Wiege gelegt. Sie wird auf dem Holztisch einer mexikanischen Küche geboren, die Wehen ihrer Mutter Elena (Regina Torne) setzten beim Zwiebelschneiden ein. Weil Elena keine Milch hat, wächst das Kind zwischen den dampfenden Töpfen und brutzelnden Pfannen der Köchin Nacha (Ada Carrasco) auf. Doch das Verhältnis zur Mama steht noch aus einem anderen Grund unter keinem guten Stern. Denn die gestrenge Matriarchin sieht es als Pflicht ihrer jüngsten Tochter, das ganze Leben für sie zu sorgen, und deshalb auf eine eigene Familie zu verzichten. Als sich Tita leidenschaftlich in Pedro (Marco Leonardi) verliebt, der schon bald um ihre Hand anhält, weigert sich die kaltherzige Matrone, das Mädchen freizugeben. Stattdessen bietet sie dem jungen Freier die älteste Tochter Rosaura zur Frau an. Er willigt ein, um immer in der Nähe seiner wahren Liebe sein zu können. Zwar wohnt die ganze Familie nun unter einem Dach. Doch Elena wacht mit Argusaugen darüber, daß sich das verhinderte Glück nicht zu nahe kommt. Tita findet allerdings eine eigene Sprache, um dem Geliebten ihre Gefühle mitzuteilen: Sie kocht. Und egal, ob sie Truthahn mit Mandeln und Sesam zubereitet, zarte Filetspitzen mit Ancho-Pfefferschoten, Nelken und Erdnüssen brät, oder Wachteln mit Kastanien in duftende Rosenblätter einlegt.
