Poco tempo dopo, però, la notizia della morte nel fiume dell'amico, forse a causa di un suicidio, getta Fabrizio in una crisi profonda che lo porta a perdere qualsiasi punto di riferimento. Qualcosa migliora quando da Milano arriva Gina, la giovane zia, con cui il ragazzo si illude di instaurare un rapporto d'amore normale e duraturo. Ben presto, però, la profonda instabilità psicologica di Gina, che è in cura da un analista, porta il loro rapporto verso un baratro di menzogne e finzioni. Fabrizio è sempre più disilluso nei confronti della vita e schifato dalla routine borghese, che vede vivere da chi gli sta intorno con i più diversi atteggiamenti: c'è la sonnacchiosa indifferenza dei suoi genitori, il decadentismo pessimistico di Puck, anziano amico di Gina o il morboso attaccamento al cinema dove i film di Rossellini e di Hitchcock diventano l'unica risposta alle domande sul senso dell'esistenza. Il ritorno di Gina a Milano è l'ultimo atto di un processo di disillusione profonda che porta Fabrizio, dopo un ultimo confronto con Cesare, a scivolare in un definitivo intorpidimento intellettuale. Recuperato il fidanzamento con Clelia, bella e "normale" figlia della borghesia, la sposa facendo felici i genitori. Gina assiste con disperazione al matrimonio mentre Cesare prosegue, nella sua classe elementare, nel tentativo di formare le coscienze
