Murray Grimsdale, painter, sculptor, illustrator, and ceramic artist, was born in Dunedin and grew up in Christchurch. He attended the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury from 1959-1963, where he studied painting with Bill Sutton and Rudi Gopas and illustration with Russell Clark. He worked as a set designer for TV and then for his partner, fashion designer Annie Bonza. In 1971 he went to London and installed exhibitions for the Camden Arts Centre, as well as working as a display artist and cover designer for a London record company. Grimsdale taught illustration to students in Vanuatu from 1990-1995 which inspired many of his paintings. Grimsdale has illustrated New Zealand School Journals for over 30 years as well as illustrating more than 30 books for successful New Zealand authors including Joy Cowley. Grimsdale received the Russel Clark Award for the illustration of Amanda Jacksons Georges Monster. Public exhibitions include: Two person exhibition with Mike Brown, Bloodlust in the Boondocks at Barry Lett Gallerys, Multiple solo shows including a 200 work exhibition at the Rotorua Museum of Art and History, Three Decades Hard Labour, directed by John Perry
