This volume collects together many of Marlowe's plays, including one of his least known works, The Massacre at Paris. The play describes the events of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572, in which Protestants were killed in great numbers by Catholic agitators. The original text of the play has been lost, and the version now used is believed to be made up largely of remembrances and transcriptions from several original audience members. Due to this fact, most scholars ignore the play when analyzing Marlowe's canon, but it still reveals something about his creative process and political sympathies. One character, the "English Agent," is believed to be based on Marlowe himself, owing to the fact that he secretly worked as a spy for the English government
