Otto Benndorf (* 1838 in Greiz, ? 1907 in Wien, 1895 Begründer der österreichischen Ausgrabungen in Ephesos und 1898 des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts) ist 28 Jahre alt, als er im Frühjahr 1867 zu einer Reise nach Sizilien aufbricht. Er ist damals Stipendiat des Instituto di Corrispondenza ?Archeologica (heute: Deutsches Archäologisches Institut) in Rom. In zahlreichen bis?lang unveröffentlichten Briefen an seine Fami?lie und an wissenschaftliche Kollegen lässt er das Leben der Einheimischen lebendig vor unseren Augen ?erstehen, schreibt über seine Erlebnisse in der Fremde, über Ausgrabungen, ?Museen und Sammlungen sowie über soziale und politische Verhältnisse kurz nach der Einigung Italiens. Er zeichnet damit ein buntes Bild vom Leben der Einheimischen, wie es aus diesen Jahren nicht allzu oft überliefert ist. Beiträge über frühe Sizilienreisen sowie die Geschichte der Archäologie in Sizilien ordnen die Reise in den historischen Kontext ein
