Anxiety : the proceedings of the thirty-ninth annual meeting of the American Psychopathological Association, held in New York City, June 1949 by American Psychopathological Association( Book )

30 editions published between 1950 and 1964 in English and Undetermined and held by 517 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"If anxiety could be controlled by biological or social means, fundamental alteration in the organization of our civilization would ensue and the probability of individual happiness would be greatly enhanced. Yet, although it is widely recognized that anxiety is the most pervasive psychological phenomenon of our time and that it is the chief symptom in the neuroses and in the functional psychoses, there has been little or no agreement on its definition, and very little, if any, progress in its measurement. The present volume cannot attempt to cover all the types of individual and group anxieties, since it is not possible to describe all the manifestations of anxiety as they occur today. It is hoped that the contributions in this volume will focus attention on the great importance of anxiety in our culture and on its importance as a cause or symptom in most emotional disorders. Even though our knowledge is incomplete, the present symposium may serve to guide current investigations as well as to provide orientation for further research"--Foreword. Relation of psychological tests to psychiatry : the proceedings of the fortieth annual meeting of the American Psychopathological Association, held in New York City, June 1950 by American Psychopathological Association( Book )

28 editions published between 1951 and 1952 in English and held by 477 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The use of psychological tests in psychiatry is so widespread today that evaluation of their actual and potential contribution to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment is long overdue. With this in mind, the American Psychopathological Association invited a select number of experts in this field to discuss critically the role of tests in psychiatry. This volume summarizes the results of these discussions. A review of these contributions indicates that there is a great diversity of opinion regarding not only the clinical usefulness of the tests, but their nature, purpose and scientific value. Nearly all the contributors would like to see these tests improved. Some are hopeful that the quantification of these technics would lead to better understanding of the mind of the normal as well as that of the abnormal. Others do not hold out so much hope for them, and regard them at best as ancillary tools. No apology need be made for the limited number of tests discussed in these papers. To have included all would have strained to the limit the publisher as well as the reader. It is hoped, however, that a sufficient sampling has been presented to give a fair cross-section of present day practice"--Foreword. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
Depression : the proceedings of the forty-second annual meeting of the American Psychopathological Association, held in New York City, June 1952 by Paul H Hoch( Book )

25 editions published between 1954 and 1961 in English and Italian and held by 430 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The most outstanding problems of psychopathology today are anxiety and depression. These emotional states and their derivatives also constitute the chief problems of everyday living in our time. The problem of anxiety was taken up in a symposium several years ago. The present symposium is devoted to depression. It is encouraging to note that studies of depression are no longer limited to the phenomenologic approach. A cataloging of the various disciplines represented in this symposium contains the following: genetics, clinical psychiatry, psychodynamics, child psychiatry, anthropology, physiology, endocrinology, biochemistry, biometrics, geriatrics, and hospital administration. We are still far from an understanding of the causes of depression. This is evidenced by the many different "causal" factors (genetic, biochemical, psychodynamic, etc.) which are advanced as the etiologic mechanisms in depression. However, we have achieved a better dynamic understanding of the depressive states, which should not be confused with their etiology. The joint attack along psychologic, psychodynamic, physiologic, biochemical, and developmental lines on the investigation of depression is bound to make progress, if in no other way, at least in shedding light in the obscure interstitial areas that lie between the disciplines"--Foreword. Failures in psychiatric treatment; the proceedings of the thirty-seventh annual meeting of the American Psychopathological Association, held in New York City, June 1947 by American Psychopathological Association( )

16 editions published in 1948 in English and held by 271 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The present symposium is, to our knowledge, the first attempt to present a general review of therapeutic failures with different psychiatric methods of treatment. It is obvious that successful cases are easy to report and the hesitancy to do similarly with unsuccessful ones is understandable. But to admit failures is a sign of intellectual and emotional maturity. Psychiatry is young as a science, battling against great handicaps because of inexact methodology as compared with the exact sciences. Nevertheless, it has amassed a large body of knowledge and has today a secure place in medical therapeusis. It is mature enough to admit failures and to analyze their origins. We believe, therefore, that the present volume will contribute to the better understanding of the theory and praxis of psychiatric treatment.
